러시아 민중의 교육문화수준을 높이기 위해 학교와 도서관을 세우고 사회를 풍자하는
굴을 쓰는 등 많은 활동을 한 프리메이슨의 영향을 받아 잡지를 출판하고,
출판사를 경영하면서 자유로운 사고를 전달하는 매체로 바꾸어 에카테리나 2세을
비판하기도하여 그의 잡지는 판금되고 체포되었다. 1796년 파벨 황제에게
 사면되었으나 문필활동은 계속 듬지되었다
