Low birth rate

Nelly became a mother a few months ago. She's gone back to work and she met up with her friend John for coffee. They talk about some of the difficulties mothers face in Korea.

 

John: It's so good to see you, Nelly. You look great, especially for someone who only gave birth the other month!

 

Nelly: Oh, stop teasing me, John. I have to be honest, it was an amazing experience. Give me a couple more months and I might consider doing it again.

 

John: Really? Then you'd be doing your bit for Korea's birth rate. I read the other day that it's the lowest in the world.

 

Nelly: I read that, too. They say children born today will be the first to witness the population cut in half.

 

John: Why are Korean mothers so averse to the idea of having many kids? I come from a big family myself, so it's difficult for me to understand.

 

Nelly: It's not that Korean women are unwilling to have children, but we simply don't have a choice. The cost of education is so high that having two or more kids is considered a luxury. A friend of mine told me she spends most of her income on her children's private education.

 

John: I didn't know that. who‘s looking after your baby now that you're back at work?

 

Nelly: My mother's taking care of him. I'm lucky to have an understanding mother who loves babies. Not everyone is as lucky as I am. Many parents have difficulty finding a proper childcare facility that's also affordable. You know, I had to come back to work only two months after Fenton was born. I couldn't afford to take any more time off.

 

John: Aren't you entitled to a year's leave?

 

Nelly: Well, that's what it says on paper. My boss actually hinted that I might lose my job if my temporary replacement turned out to be good. I've been making a point of attending all the after-hours gatherings and company picnics ever since I came back from my leave.

 

John: That's outrageous. It's no wonder that the fertility rate is plummeting.

 

nelly: I hope things change soon, because babies are just adorable and I'd love to have at least five more!

 

Language note

 

averse to : unwilling to do something or not liking something(무엇을 하기 )싫어하는

ex)I'm averse to using additives when I cook.

 

unwilling: not wanting to do something and refusing to do it(무엇을 )하기 싫어서 거부하는

ex)He wasn't unwilling to pay the bills but unable to do so.

 

understanding: sympathetic and kind about other people's problems(다른 사람들의 문제에)이해를 잘 해 주는, 이해심 많은

ex)I wanted to take a long vacation and fortunately my boss was very understanding about it.

 

entitle to : to give someone the official right to do or have something권리(자격)이 주어지다

ex)All employees are entitled to two weeks of vacation time a year.

 

leave: time that you are allowed to spend away from you work휴가

ex)My basic annual leave is 14 days.

 

on paper: If something seems true on paper, it seems to be true as an idea, but may not be true in a real situation. In theory.서류상으로

ex)It says she's thirty on paper but she''s actually a bit older than that.

 

after-hours: not during regular working hours근무 시간 후의, 영업 시간 후의

ex)It's nice to meet up with colleagues after-hours as you can sometimes see different sides to them.

 

plummet: to suddenly and quickly decrease in value or amount, to plunge가치나 양이 급격히 줄다.

ex)Profits plummeted by 40% this quarter.

넬리는 몇 달 전 엄마가 되었다. 그녀는 직장으로 복귀해 친구 존을 만나 커피를 마시고 있다. 그들은 한국에서 어머니들이 직면하는 몇몇 어려움에 대해서 이야기한다.

 

존: 만나서 정말 반가워요, 넬리. 좋아 보이는데요, 특히 몇 달 전 출산을 한 사람 치고는 말이에요.

 

넬리: 오, 그만 놀리세요, 존. 솔직히 말하면, 아주 놀라운 경험이었어요. 저에게 몇 달만 더 주어진다면 다시 출산을 할까 고려할지도 몰라요.

넬리: 저도 읽었어요. 그 기사에 의하면 오늘날 태어나는 어린이들은 인구가 반으로 줄어드는 것을 직접 경험할 첫 세대가 될 거래요.

 

존: 왜 많은 한국 어머니들이 아이들을 많이 가지는 것에 대해서 그렇게 싫어할까요? 전 대가족에서 자라서 이러한 점을 이해하기 어려워요.

 

넬리: 한국 어머니들이 아이를 가지고 싶어 하지 않는 것이 아니에요. 우리에겐 선택의 여지가 없을 뿐이에요. 교육비가 너무 높아서 2명 또는 그 이상의 아이를 가지는 것은 사치라고 생각되고 있어요. 제 친구 중 한 명은 저에게 그녀의 수입 대부분을 아이들 사교육비로 쓰고 있다고 했어요.

 

존: 그건 몰랐네요. 이제 직장으로 복귀하면 누가 아이ㅇ를 돌보나요?

 

넬리: 저의 어머니가 돌보고 있어요. 전 아이를 사랑하는 이해심 많은 어머니를 두어서 행운이에요. 모두가 저처럼 운이 좋은 것은 아니에요. 많은 부모들이 적절하고 또한 부담 가능한 보육 시설을 찾는 데 어려움을 겪고 있어요. 아시다시피, 전 펜튼이 태어나고 나서 2개월만에 직장에 복귀해야 했어요. 더 이상의 쉴 시간을 낼 수 없었어요.

 

존: 일 년 휴가를 쓸 권리가 있지 않나요?

 

넬리: 음, 서류상으로는 그렇죠. 실제로 제 상사는 저의 대타가 괜찮다고 판단이 되면 제가 일자리를 잃을지도 모른다는 눈치를 주었어요. 휴가에서 돌아온 이 후 저는 모든 업무 후 모임들과 야유회를 참가하며 점수를 따려고 노력해 왔어요.

 

존: 그건 너무하네요. 출산율이 곤두박질치는 것이 놀라운 일이 아니군요.

 

넬리: 전 상황이 개선되기를 바랍니다. 아이들은 정말 사랑스러워서 적어도 다섯은 가지고 싶거든요!
