Knapp Seymour University
2019 Spring Semester
HOMILETICS Syllabus
This course is titled “THE WORD ALIVE BY THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT”
By Professor Dr. Robert Z. Sutterfield
Doctorate of Divinity from the School of Bible Theology University
President/Superintendent of Pentecostal Assemblies of God of America
President of Knapp Seymour University
Introduction:
HOMILETICS is “The process of preaching and writing Sermons.”
I like to put it like this course description:
“Homiletics is the study of the composition and delivery of a Spirit-led message, such as a Sermon; Bible Study or other types of messages.”
The purpose of the course is learning to preach and teach the most effective way.
“Reaching the 1 to 1,000 +”
The size of the audience does not matter, the size of one or the size of a mega church congregation. The delivery should be the same, “Spirit-led” to bring the Word of God to life, from Logos = Rhema: off the paper and into the hearts.
All is vain ministering unless the Spirit of the Holy one comes through you and brings God’s manna to the hearers.
God will strengthen you as you become more aware and dependent on the Spirit’s power for Preaching.
Class Hour Assigned Requirements: making 6 sermons from deductive and inductive themes as well as 1 sermon from expository preaching.
Grading is determined by the combined result of Midterm and Final Exams given by Robert & his team Instructors.

Exemplar TEXT: I Corinthians 2:1-5
And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.
For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.
And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.
And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
The Apostle Paul like all of us was a mere natural man; we are mere natural men and women, and the Holy Spirit is the Supernatural Man – the Power from within us!
Paul acknowledges that his powerful preaching is not from anything from him; he plainly tells the Corinthians that there is nothing special about himself, but it is all about the Power of the Holy Spirit who is within him.
As Preachers and Teachers, we should be quick to confess the need for the Spirit’s Power in our ministering.
The fruit of evangelical Preaching & Teaching demonstrates far more than just “telling” what the Spirit wants done, but in “showing” what the Spirit wants done.
Spirit-led ministering is accomplished by a Preacher/Teacher who in their surrendered state has been “taken ahold of” by the Spirit. As the Spirit takes ahold of the Minister and compels him/her to preach, the Spirit also takes ahold of the audience and compels them to listen, and God speaks through such preaching & witness.
CONCLUSION:
Attachment by Detachment in the Spirit
The desire & fruit to be Spirit-led Ministers will cause you to take this course:
“THE WORD ALIVE BY THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT”
Learning to preach and teach the most effective way through being with Jesus.
“The Word Alive by the Power of The Spirit” course is to help you and assist you to prepare your message and yourself for the work that God has called you to do.
