어제 또 내 책 서평이 나왔다. 이번에는 네덜란드학자가 RBL에 게재했다.

"In this revised dissertation completed under the supervision of I. H. Marshall, the author argues that the New Testament title “Son of God” should not primarily be explained in an adoptionistic sense following Jesus’ resurrection but rather from his self-consciousness, which was confirmed by the heavenly voice at his baptism. This is an ambitious project because, in stating this, Lee goes against a certain scholarly consensus. The author deserves praise not only for his brave attempt but also for his clear overviews of the different exegetical positions, for his mastery of the secondary literature, and for the architecture of the book. It is written in a lucid style, and the result of his project is very readable. For example, by starting most new paragraphs with his conclusion, he lets the reader know how the arguments will run. Having said that, this praise does not exclude some criticism, as will become clear later."

"This book is a witness to the international character of New Testament scholarship. Lee (1963) is of Asian origin, obtained his bachelor degree at Buenos Aires, his masters degree at Singapore, and his Ph.D. at Aberdeen. Now he is a lecturer of New Testament and Greek at Biblical Graduate School of Theology in Singapore, and his book is published in a Tübingen series. “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Certainly, this is one of the best known verses in the Bible and many people can even recite it by heart. As we enter Year 2008 I hope a meditation on this very important instruction by Jesus recorded in Matthew 6:33 would be a helpful signpost for the whole year. For it is one thing to know it by heart and entirely another thing to live by the same truth!

We need to remember that this instruction does not come to us as a free-floating statement of Jesus, but as part of its immediate context (Mat 6:25-34) where Jesus is talking about anxiety. His teaching here is not too difficult to understand. As a good teacher he uses examples from everyday life (e.g., the birds of the air; the lilies in the field) to put across his point. He urges the disciples not to worry about anything because their “heavenly Father” knows that they need all these things. Then finally, he gives the instruction: “Seek first his [God’s] kingdom and his righteousness.” It comes as the climactic and concluding statement to the whole passage.

Now then, what do you think it means to seek first God’s kingdom and his righteousness in our lives? I believe that what our Lord Jesus is trying to say can be uncovered in two layers.

Firstly, Jesus is simply saying: “Trust in me and in your heavenly Father.” Keep trusting in your heavenly Father whatever circumstances you are now in, whether good or bad. Jesus in urging his disciples not to be anxious about anything is not reprimanding them for being anxious. Rather, he is addressing the problem of their lack of faith in their heavenly Father. He knows that anxiety is poisonous to our spiritual life. It blurs our spiritual eyesight and prevents us from seeing God’s hand in our lives. Jesus sees our lack of faith as the main cause of all our anxieties. Look at v. 30: “O you of little faith!” In v.33 Jesus gives us an antidote against all our anxieties. We can’t get this medicine from our GPs or any pharmacy elsewhere; it is only available from Him.

Our lives are full of uncertainty as we face difficulties sometime or another. We are like a man crossing a vast ocean in a small boat. There are times when the sailing is smooth and easy with favorable winds and calm waters, but there are times when strong winds and torrential rains come and we eventually end up in a situation almost impossible to handle. Sometimes it can seem like you are standing on the very edge of a cliff or facing a dead end or a huge wall. We call this ‘being stuck between a rock and a hard place.’ Even in such moments he wants us to trust in our heavenly Father.

Now, this antidote comes with two very important ingredients. That’s why Jesus didn’t simply say “Trust in your heavenly Father,” but “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.” Now we turn to uncover the second layer (the deeper meaning). Here Jesus is reminding the disciples of their true identity: who they are and who they belong to (the first ingredient). Jesus is addressing the problem of our identity crisis. So he uses the term “your heavenly Father” repeatedly to remind us that it is to him and his kingdom we belong, even though we live in this world (cf. John 17:16). So “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.” Jesus wants us to be different from Gentiles or non-believers. From the very moment we commit our lives to Jesus, we are given a new identity and we become God’s children. We come under his protection and he cares for us. We are not just mere individuals randomly placed in this part of the world trying to survive alone by ourselves. If you think so, you need this medication.

Imagine that you are the son of a multimillionaire. Would you be worried about whether you will have enough money to feed yourself till the end of the month or whether you will have a place to live next year? Jesus says elsewhere, “Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! (Mt 7:9-11). Christmas reminds us that God sent his only beloved Son to this world to save you and me and to give us eternal life. So it is not a matter of how much we have, but who we are, and it is not a matter of our sight, but our faith, how fully we trust in our heavenly Father.

Even if you were a billionaire, can your money protect you from all difficulties, trials and uncertainties? The world tempts us to live like anybody else. Commercial advertisements and insurance policies for every imaginable catastrophe try to convince us that we need all these things, and that we are able to protect ourselves from all kinds of uncertainties. But, that’s what Satan whispers into our ears. I’m not against you being rich; nor am I against insurance companies. I’m just trying to describe the world we live in and how we are prone to lose our sight of God and our faith in him as we live in this world.

Finally, we need to understand the true character of v.33. Grammatically speaking, it comes in the imperative mode, as a command for us to obey. But to see it as a mere command is to fail to understand its full significance. I discovered a valuable insight when I realized that it is Satan who makes us perceive it as a command to be obeyed merely out of duty as Christians. In fact, this command comes as God’s message with tremendous blessings in disguise. We can only experience God’s blessings when we follow his instructions willingly and with thanksgiving in our hearts. Let me give you an example. If you were a diabetic you would need to control your diet (eating a limited amount of food at each meal and abstaining from sugary snacks) and exercise regularly. It requires a lot of effort and discipline on your part. For some people, controlling their diet and exercising everyday can be a tremendous burden but for others it can be a great way of enjoying a much healthier lifestyle. So it is really a matter of how you see things. Whether you see this command as duty or as blessing is up to us. But I can guarantee that the result will be totally different.

“Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness” is not to put us under the burden of obedience but a warm invitation of Jesus for us to enjoy his blessings fully in Christ (the second ingredient). To seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, thus, is to fully experience the rule of God and his blessings in our hearts and to make the kingdom the center of our existence in Christ. May the Lord help us to remember his Word in throughout the new year!

시편 118:1-18

오늘은 제가 두주 전 저희 신학교 채플시간에 학생들과 교수, 그리고 직원들과 함께 나눴던 말씀을 전할가 합니다. 오늘 함께 읽은 시편 118편은 제가 개인적으로 굉장히 좋아하는 시편입니다. 왜냐하면 제가 작년에 간이식수술을 받고 돌아와서 회복하는 가운데 하나님의 말씀을 깊이 묵상할 수 있는 시간들이 많았는데, 그 때 시편들은 저에게 큰 힘과 은혜와 감사를 체험할 수 있는 좋은 말씀들이었습니다. 저는 이 시편을 읽으면서 시편기자의 마음과 너무나 깊이 공감할 수 있었고 또 하나님께 뜨거운 감사를 드릴 수 있었습니다. 그가 이 시편에 써놓은 고백들은 제 그 당시 심정을 너무나 똑같이 대변해 주고 있었기 때문입니다.

시편에는 여러가지 종류의 시들이 들어있는데오늘 시편 118편은 감사의 시입니다. 또 그냥 개인의 감사의 시가 아니라 오늘 이 시편의 주인공은 왕입니다. 사실, 이 시는 옛날 구약시대 이스라엘의 예배예식에서 사용되었던 시라고 말할 수 있습니다. 그래서 이 시를 바르게 이해하려면 어느 부분이 왕이 말하는 것이고 또 어떤 부분이 제사장이 말하는 것이고 또 일반성도들이 말하는 것인지를 바로 알아야 합니다.그래야 그 부분들을 바르게 이해할 수 있습니다. 그냥 민밑하게 말하는 것이 아니라 음악에 맞추어 노래하는 것이라고 말하는 것이 더 정확합니다. 그런데 오늘은 금요기도회고 시간 관계상 그 자세한 얘기는 말씀드릴 수 없고 그냥 왕의 고백만을 중심으로 말씀을 듣도록 하겠습니다.

오늘 시편에서 왕의 대사는5-19절 그리고 28절입니다. 1-4절은 여호와 하나님의 인자하심을 4번에 걸쳐서 찬양하고 있습니다.

그러고나서 5절부터 오늘의 주인공인 왕이 등장합니다. 그는 처음부터 ‘내가 고통 중에 여호와께 부르짖었더니 여호와께서 응답하시고 나를 광활한 곳에 세우셨도다.’라고 고백합니다. 도대체 한 나라를 다스리는 왕이 무슨 일을 당했길래 이런 엄청난 고백을 하게 되었을까요? 아주 정확한 이유는 우리가 알 수 없겠지만 시의 여러가지 정황을 보면 아마 그가 한 나라의 장수로서 그 나라의 운명뿐 아니라 자신의 생명까지 위급했던 전쟁에서 기적적으로 목숨을 건지게 된 것이 아닌가 생각됩니다. 사실 이 고백을 그 시적인 표현 그대로 번역하면 그 현실감과 현장감이 더 실감나게 잘 드러납니다. ‘내가 협소한 공간에서 여호와께 부르짖었더니 여호와께서 응답하시고 나를 광활한 곳에 세우셨도다.’ 그러니까 그가 너무나 다급한 상황에서 생명이 왔다갔다하는 가운데 하나님께 간절히 기도하며 부르짖었더니 하나님께서 그 기도를 들어주셨다는 것입니다.

11절에 ‘저희가 나를 에워싸고 에워쌌’다는 얘기가 나오고 12절에는 ‘저희가 나를 벌과 같이 나를 에워쌌’다고 말하고 13절에서는 ‘네가 나를 밀쳐 넘어뜨리려’했다고 그 당시를 회상하고 있습니다. 그리고 17절에서는 ‘내가 죽지 않고 살아서 여호와의 행사를 선포하’겠다고 말합니다.

여러분들 가운데에도 오늘 나오는 이 왕의 경험과 똑같은 경험은 아닐찌라도 이와 비슷한 경험을 하신 분이 계시리라고 믿습니다. 저도 이 왕이 경험했던 것과 똑같은 것은 아니지만 그의 마음을 읽을 수 있고 그가 여기서 하고 있는 모든 고백들을 나의 고백으로 받아들일 수 있는 은혜를 체험하게 되었습니다. 오늘 우리가 금요기도회에 나와서 하나님의 말씀을 들으며 기도할 때 하나님께서 친히 여러분들에게도 동일한 은혜와 말씀을 들려 주시기를 기원합니다.

이렇게 극한 위급한 상황에서 하나님의 도움과 기도의 응답을 경험한 이 왕은 6-9절까지 다음과 같은 믿음의 고백을 하게 됩니다.

‘여호와는 내 편이시라 내게 두려움이 없나니 사람이 내게 어찌할꼬

여호와께서 내 편이 되사 나를 돕는 자 중에 계시니 그러므로 나를 미워하는 자에게 보응하시는 것을 내가 보리로다.

여호와께 피함이 사람을 신뢰함도다 나으며

여호와께 피함이 방백들을 신뢰함보다 낫도다’

여호와는 내 편이라는 것, 여호와께 피함이 사람을 신뢰하는 것보다 낫다는 것, 이런 고백은 보통 교회를 다니는 사람들에게 그리 대단한 고백이 아닐 수 있습니다. 목사님들 설교에서 너무나 자주 듣는 말씀들 아닙니까? 맞습니다. 여호와는 내 편이라는 것을 아는 것 중요합니다. 그런 믿음이 있어야 합니다. 그런데 그것을 그냥 알고 있는 것만 가지고는 부족합니다. 우리는 그 보다 한걸음 더 나아가야 합니다. 이런 고백이 우리 입에서만 나와서 되는 것이 아니라 우리 심령 깊은 곳에서 나와야 합니다. 우리가 개인적으로 하나님을 직접 만나고 그를 체험함으로서 그런 고백이 나와야 우리 신앙생활에 활기가 있고 진정한 감사와 찬양이 나오게 됩니다. 하나님의 말씀을 더 사모하게 됩니다. 주님을 어떻게 하면 기쁘시게 해 드릴까 고민합니다. 주님 앞에 무릎꿇고 기도하는 시간을 좋아하게 됩니다. 하나님을 의지하고 기도하는 것이 사람을 신뢰하는 것 보다 더 낫다는 것, 하나님을 개인적으로 만나 그의 선하시고 인자하심이 영원하심을 경험한 사람만이 진정으로 고백할 수 있는 신앙고백입니다.

그러고나서 다시 10-13절에서는 과거의 경험에 대해 다시 말합니다.

14절에 다시 ‘여호와는 나의 능력과 찬송이시요 또 나의 구원이 되셨도다.’라며 신념에 찬 믿음의 고백을 다시 한번 강하게 외칩니다. 이런 고백도 자기의 경험과 그 경험을 통해 배운 교훈들을 바탕으로 나오게 되는 것이고 그 자리에 모인 모든 사람들도 함께 그 고백에 동참하게 되는 것입니다.

시편은 다름 아닌 시들의 모음집입니다. 우리는 우리의 깊은 생각과 감정들을 글로 표현하기 위해서 시를 쓰게 됩니다. 저는 개인적으로 시를 못 씁니다. 왜 우리가 어떨때는 한편의 시를 읽고 눈물을 흘릴 때가 있습니까? 그 이유는 우리가 시를 읽을 때 그 시인의 생각과 마음을 읽을 수 있고 공감할 수 있기 때문입니다. 시편의 진가는 (진정한 미와 가치는) 여러분들이 그 시편기자의 생각과 마음을 읽을 수 있을 때, 그래서 자기도 모르게 그 사람과 동일시하게 될 때 비로소 알게 되지 않습니까? 마치 여러분들도 그 시인과 똑같은 경험을 한 것 같은 느낌을 받을 때 그 시의 참 가치가 드러나는 것입니다. 물론, 시편기자의 경험과 여러분의 경험이 똑같을 수는 없을 것입니다. 시편기자는 그 사람 나름대로, 여러분들은 여러분 나름대로 경험이 다를 수 있습니다. 여기서 나오는 왕은 그 당시 한 나라의 왕으로서 위기를 통해 하나님을 경험했다면 저는 신학교 교수로서 목사로서 간이식수술이라는 고난을 통해 하나님의 사랑을 체험하게 된 것입니다. 그렇지만 진짜 놀랍고 위대한 사실은 하나님의 영감으로 쓰여진 성경말씀은 수천년이 지난 오늘날에도 그 말씀을 읽는 우리들에게 똑같은 감동으로 우리 심령을 울릴 수 있는 힘이 있고 우리를 변화시킬 수 있는 말씀이라는 것입니다.

18절에서 왕은 다시 이런 고백을 합니다. ‘여호와께서 나를 심히 경책하셨어도 죽음에는 붙이지 아니하셨도다.’ 이번에는 단순히 자신의 과거경험에 대한 얘기가 아니라 그 경험을 통해 얻게된 교훈이 있음을 나타내고 있습니다. 그는 그의 경험이 자신을 경책하고 가르침을 줬다고 말합니다. 물론 그는 하나님께서 자기를 포기하지 않으시고 새생명을 연장해 주셨음에 감사하고 있습니다. 그러나 그는 그와 같이 어려운 고난을 통과하면서 정말 고귀한 교훈을 얻게 되었다는 것입니다. ‘여호와께서 나를 심히 경책했다, 책망했다’는 것입니다.

우리는 이 세상을 살면서 여러가지 어려움과 고난을 경험하게 됩니다. 어떤 고난이나 어려움은 다 힘들고 아픔이 있습니다. 이 세상의 그 누구도 고난을 좋아하는 사람은 없습니다. 고난에는 장사가 없다는 말도 있습니다. 고난은 누구나 싫어합니다. 하지만 우리는 고난을 통과하면서 인생을 배웁니다. 평탄대로에서는 인생을 바로 보고 배울 수 없다고 생각합니다. 저는 ‘이 세상에 왜 고난과 고통이 존재하는가?라는 철학적인 질문에 대한 답은 모릅니다. 그러나 제가 제 경험을 통해 한가지 아는 것은 우리가 이 세상을 살며 겪는 고난과 어려움은 사실은 감추어진 하나님의 축복이라는 것입니다. 물론, 저는 지금 우리가 고난을 자처해야 한다거나 고난을 고대해야 한다는 말이 아닙니다. 아무리 고난이 감추어진 하나님의 축복이라 할찌라도 여기 모인 사람 중 한사람도 고난을 바라지는 않을 것입니다.

저는 제가 간이식수술을 받게 된 것에 대해 하나님께 감사하며 자부심까지 가지고 있습니다. 하나님의 은혜와 축복을 경험하는 통로였기 때문입니다. 이 고난을 통해 하나님의 크신 사랑과 인자하심을 체험했기 때문입니다. 하나님께서 이 일을 통해 저의 심령을 만져주셨기 때문입니다. 저의 육체적인 질병을 고쳐주셨음은 물론 저의 마음을 고쳐주셨고 저의 심령을 새롭게 만져주셨습니다. 제가 고난을 통과하고 있는 동안 하나님께서는 저와 제 집사람과 함께 하셨고 함께 아파하셨습니다. 부모가 자녀가 아파할 때 같이 아파하는 것 처럼 말입니다. 물론 아직도 힘들때도 있습니다.

정기 검진

그럼에도 저는 하나님께 빚진 자로서 감사함으로 살고 있습니다. 제가 건강을 되찾았기 때문만이 아니라 하나님의 인자하심이 영원함을 경험했기 때문입니다.

신앙인가, 맹신인가?

싱가포르에서는 8월이 되면 우리가 흔히 상상하기 힘든 광경들이 벌어진다. 깨끗한 도시임을 자랑하는 싱가포르에서 마구 길거리에서 또 아파트 단지내 여기 저기서 제 멋대로 향을 피우고 종이들을 태워 검은 먼저가 하늘을 날아다닌다.

'Hungry Ghost'로 불리우는 이 기간은 음력 7월에 해당한다. 쉽게 말하면 돌아가신 조상들에게 제사를 드리는 기간이다. 길거리에 제사상을 차려놓고 향을 피우기도 하고 드럼통 같은 데에다가 불을 피우고 부적이나 가짜돈을 태우기도 한다. 그런데 가만히 차려놓은 음식들을 들여다 보면 가관이 아니다. 모두 다 자기들은 먹지도 않을 싸구려 빵이나 과자, 과일들이다. 이런 음식들은 사실 이런 '제사용'으로 만들어 파는 가게에서 그냥 사다가 차려놓은 것이다. 조상신들이 배고파 할까봐 이런 음식들을 차려놓고 와서 먹으라는 것이다.

그런데 더 중요한 것은 이런 것들을 하는 근본적인 이유이다. 이들은 이렇게 해서 자기 조상신들을 노엽게 하지 않고 잘 모셔야 자기들이 하는 사업이나 모든 일들이 복을 받고 평탄하게 된다는 미신을 믿고 있는 것이다. 한 술 더 떠서 이들은 가짜 종이돈 (hell banknotes: 여기서 hell은 지옥이 아니라 연옥이라 보는 것이 맞다)을 가게에서 사다가 불에 태운다. 그렇게 하는 이유는 자기 조상들이 아직 극락에 가지 못하고 연옥에서 고생하고 있는데 돈을 이렇게 태워서 '송금'해 줘야 그들이 그곳에서 고생하지 않고 편하게 살 수 있고 또 그 돈을 가지고 연옥을 지키는 신들에게 뇌물을 먹여서 극락에 들어갈 수 있도록 도와주어야 한다는 것이다. 이들 중에는 물론 자기 부모나 조상들을 공경하는 마음으로 그렇게 하는 사람들도 있겠지만 대다수의 사람들은 이렇게 조상신들을 잘 봉양해야 자기들에게 올 저주를 막고 사업이 번창하고 복받고 만사형통할 것이라고 믿고 있는 것이다.

세계첨단기술을 가진 선진국이라고 자부하는 싱가포르에서 이런 일들이 오늘날에도 흔히 볼 수 있다는 것은 참으로 아이러니한 일이 아닐 수 없다. 서로 조화를 이룰래야 이룰 수 없는 두가지 모습이 서로 공존하고 있는 것이다. 우리 기독교인들이 볼 땐 참으로 어이가 없는 일이 아닐 수 없다. 아니, 아마 현대인들 중 대부분이 그렇게 생각할 것이다. 그런데 우리가 한번 생각해 봐야 할 것은 우리 기독교인들 중에서도 기본적으로는 이와 비슷한 생각을 가지고 신앙생활을 하는 사람들이 없지나 않을까 생각해 보게된다.

요즘 교회들의 추세를 보면 theology of health and wealth or prosperity theology 가 교회 중심에 크게 자리잡고 있는 것을 본게 된다. 교회에 나와 예수를 믿으면 병고침 받고 사업이 잘되고 만사형통한다는 복음아닌 복음을 전하는 교회들이 얼마나 많은가? 교회를 열심히 다니며 봉사도 하고 기도도 열심히 하고 십일조.헌금을 열심히 드려야 하나님으로 부터 복을 받고 사업이 잘 되고 자녀들이 축복받고 만사형통하리라고 믿는 신앙이라면 싱가폴인들이 조상신에게 제사드리며 이 세상의 복을 비는 것과 근본적으로 무엇이 다를까 생각해 본다. 우리는 우리가 믿는 하나님이 어떤 분이신가를 성경을 통해 잘 배워야 한다. 우리가 믿은 창조주 여호와 하나님이 이런 세상의 잡신들의 위치로 전락해도 된다는 말인가?

This is an extraordinary novel. If you’ve ever wondered what a world without rules or laws would be, this is the book for you. People know what a world like this would be like but only few understand it. Catch a glimpse of the horror in this book. This novel is about a group of schoolboys who are stranded on an island when their plane crashes. There are no grown-ups and for a short time, the children are joyous and free. However when Ralph, the appointed chief, makes the decision to get to the point and stop the fun, mutiny erupts and Jack, a merciless villain of a kid, becomes chief instead. From then on, things go awry and all the kids do is to hunt pigs and enjoy themselves. Gradually, the kids all except Samneric (the twins Sam and Eric), Piggy (who eventually dies after being thrown off the cliff) and Ralph, have their minds twisted. They turn into primitive savages, wearing face paint and carrying spears all the time. Killing is all they think about until one fine day, the island burns down and a passing ship rescues them. And behind all this, the major mastermind was the Lord of the Flies, who frightened everyone and drove them to savagery.

At the end, Ralph, one of the few survivors, weeps for the lost innocence and humanity, the blackness of the human heart and most of all, for Piggy, the one who was always there for him, the one who was the wise and loyal friend, who unfortunately died in the hands of the savages.

In this story, William Golding used many symbols. The most import!ant of which was the Lord of the Flies. He used the word Beelzebub which is thought to have been mistranslated and mistransliterated. It is originally a name devoted to decay, destruction and suffering which is perfect for this novel.

I highly recommend this novel and I give it a rating of 10 out of 10. It is a truly excellent book. Other books by William Golding include Rites of Passage, also an award-winning novel.

War and Peace is a novel set in the times of the French invasion of Russia in the early 1800s. It tells of the Russian army's constant defeats and effects this had on the lives of the Russian upper-classes. Tolstoy writes on a large [scale] scope and writes to the last detail. He describes how the French, after winning battles like "there's no tomorrow," makes a series of blunders and end up running away from the smaller Russian army - all because of Napoleon's valet's mistake of not bringing Napoleon's waterproof boots. This powerful story teaches us of the mistakes made by everyone, from the Kutuzov, the mighty Russian field marshal to the poor valet mentioned earlier and Leo Tolstoy breaks away from the story sometimes to personally guide you in following his line of thought and what happened behind the scenes. However, War and Peace talks of society too. From pleasures in money and women to marriages and deaths, from affairs to plain petty squabbles, Tolstoy spans his book from one corner of issues to the other rather splendidly without confusion. In the end, Russia is saved but starts to crumble upon itself as the young inexperienced Tsar promotes incompetent men. This leads to the corruption and weakness of the government. Out of five prominent families only one is left and out of this family rises an ambitious revolutionary: Nikolenka Bolkonsky, son of Andrei Bolkonsky who eventually dies from a mortar wound during the war. Now Nikolenka strives to do something that will make his late father proud and the story ends there. After this, Tolstoy continues and talks about how man falls and how one man can turn a revolution into a war. It becomes quite hard to catch up with Leo's line of thought here as this part is highly philosophical.

This story is hard to grasp at first, but continue reading it and you'll slowly begin to enjoy it. One shortcoming is that Leo talks about many people - at least 30 to be precise, which of course is too much to swallow. However, I give this book an excellent rating of 8.5/10.

Recommended for ages 15+.

시편 118편 Psalm 118

Chapel sermon on 15 August 2007

The devotional theme of this afternoon is God’s steadfast love and our thanksgiving.

I’ve chosen Psalm 118 for our devotion today and I must confess that it is one of the psalms very close to my heart. In fact, I began to like the Psalter during my recovery from my operation last year and I still like them because I can closely identify myself with the psalmists there.

There are different types of psalms in our Psalter and Psalm 118 is a royal psalm (because the main character of the psalm is the king) and also a liturgical psalm, meaning that it was part of Israel’s worship, a thanksgiving service performed outside and inside the sanctuary. In other words, this liturgy was processional in nature. If I were to use a modern analogy, for example, in our Convocation and Thanksgiving service every year, at the beginning of the service we have also a processional, where all the BGST council members, the Dean and faculty members and the guest speaker walk into the sanctuary while music, usually the organ, is played. Instead of simply an organist playing a piece of music and walking in line as slowly and solemnly as possible, in the OT this psalm was part of an actual ceremony itself and different parts of the psalm were actually sung by different groups of people. Scholars believe that vv.1-19 took place outside the temple gate and vv.20-29 inside, in the temple court.

Why did people do that? Obviously, since this was a thanksgiving psalm, they wished to acknowledge God’s love for them and give thanks to Him through the liturgy. In doing so, I believe, they also reflected on their past, how their God led Israel as a nation corporately and also as an individual at a more personal level.

I could closely identify myself with the king, the main character in this psalm.

I would like to invite all of us to do the same this afternoon.

It would be helpful to see clearly the structure of this liturgical psalm if we want to understand how it was used in its historical context. This helps us to understand the meaning of the text. But when we read a psalm, understanding the meaning of the text is not the end itself. It is rather the foundation for us to be able to draw out the deeper meaning, to be able to interact with the life and experience of the psalmist and see the acts of God, the one who is acting behind the scene for his people. We see in the pages of the psalms the psalmists’ thoughts, emotions and feelings. So Prof. James Houston said during his lectures on the Psalms that, if we memorize all the 150 psalms and make them part of our own, and then we do not need the modern psychology!
