as... as as adverb / preposition

Look at this example:

He came as quickly as he could.

This structure is used to measure and compare things that are of similar proportion. In this construction, the first as functions as an adverb modifying the following adjective or adverb. The second as functions as a preposition when it relates to the following noun or pronoun. (It can also function as a conjunction when it relates to the following clause.) Compare the following:

The meal was as good as the conversation: spicy and invigorating!
She spoke as slowly as she could
Has everybody eaten as much as they want?
I hope you will agree that I am as imaginative a cook as my wife (is)!

Note from the above example that if there is an adjective and a noun after the first as, a / an must go between them. Note also that if we want to make a negative statement, we can use so…as instead of as…as:

He is not so / as intelligent as his sister is.
The cafeteria was not so / as crowded as it was earlier.

There are a large number of idiomatic expressions or fixed phrases which we use in informal English when we are making comparisons like this. Here are a few of them in context:

He went as white as a sheet when he saw the ghost.
My maths teacher is as deaf as a post and should have retired years ago.
She sat there as quiet as a mouse and wouldn’t say anything.
Electricity will be restored to our homes as soon as possible.
All the children were as good as gold when they came to visit me.
These stories are as old as the hills and have been passed down from generation to generation.

Remember that when we are measuring or comparing things that are of unequal proportion, we need to use the structure comparative + than:

Let me finish the report. I can type much faster than you (can).
He played the piece of music more slowly than I had ever heard it played before.

as as subordinating conjunction

Note that as by itself is used as a subordinating conjunction in a variety of different ways.

as = when (for clauses of time)

We may use as as an alternative to when when we are comparing two short actions or events that happened or happen at the same period of time. We often combine it with just:

She left the house (just) as the sun was rising.
The telephone rang (just) as I was climbing into my bath.

as = because (for clauses of reason)

We may use as as an alternative to because when the reason is already known or self-evident to the reader of listener. As - clauses are often placed at the beginning of sentences.
Because puts more emphasis on the reason or introduces new information. Compare the following:

As Mary was the eldest child, she had to look after her younger brothers and sisters.
As it had started to rain we had to abandon the picnic.
I’ve decided to end our relationship because my boyfriend has been cheating on me.

as for clauses of proportion

Here, as means over the same period of time as:

I think you become more tolerant of other people as you get older.
As prices rose, the demand for higher salaries became more intense.

as as preposition

Finally, note that as can also be used as a preposition when we want to avoid using the verb to be. Compare the following:

As his father, it is your duty to ensure that he goes to school every day.
As you are his father, it is your duty to ensure that he goes to school every day.
As a social historian, I am always interested in people’s life styles.
Being a social historian, I am always interested in people’s life styles.
He established his reputation as a freedom fighter through many heroic acts.

책장에서 The Little Prince 어린왕자를 발견하고 쌩땍쥬베리가 직접 그린 삽화를 보며 감탄하고 있는데

문득 이 책이 저자가 프랑스 사람이라 불어로 쓰여졌을 것이라는 생각이 들었다. 내가 가지고 있는 것은 오래된 것으로 Katherine Woods 가 영어로 번역하여 피콜로사에서 1982년 출간한 것이다. 요즘 나오는 영어판은 다른 사람이 이 번역하였다고 한다. 찾아보니 세 사람이 영어로 번역하였는데 이에 따른 문체에 대한 글을 찾을 수 있었다. 아래 사이트에 가면 더 자세한 것을 알 수 있다.

A poll of 15,000 women that rated the world's best and worst lovers found that German men topped the worst list because they were deemed "too smelly," the Telegraph reported.

The Germans were followed closely by the English, who were considered "too lazy," while the Swedes, who came in third, were accused of being "too quick to finish."

On the other end of the spectrum, Latin countries topped the "best lover" list, with Spain at number one, followed by Brazil, Italy and France, reported the Daily Mail.

The poll was carried out by www.OnePoll.com and asked women from 20 countries to rate men from different countries based on their ability in bed. The women also had to provide an explanation for their answers, the Telegraph reported.

The Dutch were considered too rough, while Americans made it into the Top 5 on the worst lovers list because they were too dominating in bed, Fox News reported.

The other countries that also did badly are: Greece (soppy), Scotland (too loud), Turkey (too sweaty), Wales (too selfish) and Russia (too hairy), the Hindustan Times reported.

프랑스 텔레콤에서 일하는 직원들이 잇달아 자살을하고 있다한다. 2008년 2월 이후 24명이 목숨을 끊었다는데 이는 회사의 소위 a form of 'lean and mean', authoritarian management in which employees are treated as movable parts of a big machine 때문이라는 분석도 나오고 있다.

이 회사는 영국에서 Orange 라는 휴대폰회사로 알려져있는데 나는 pay as you go 로 20파운드 한국돈 4만원어치 사 넣어두면 보통 석달이상 썼다.

내가 애용하던 휴대전화 회사에서 이런 일이 벌어지니 참 안됐다는 생각이 든다.

France Telecom is struggling to deal with a wave of staff suicides which has seen more than 20 workers take their lives in the past 18 months – some leaving notes blaming job stress and misery at work.

Today a technician in Troyes, south-east of Paris, stabbed himself in front of other staff during a management meeting. He had been told his job was to be cut. The man, in his 50s, was being treated in hospital for a stomach wound last night and was said to be stable.

France Telecom, whose key brand is Orange, is Europe's third largest mobile phone operator and biggest provider of broadband internet services. After what union leaders at France Telecom called a "spiral" of suicides over recent years – six staff have killed themselves since mid-July – the company has promised better medical support for workers and will today enter negotiations with unions to tackle workplace stress.

However, unions have warned that the company's entire management approach must be overhauled and some have called for strike action in Brittany on the same day. Trade union representatives at the company have blamed restructuring cuts, extreme pressure, bullying and poor management methods – which, they say, have worsened since privatisation.

판소리, 가야금연주, 가야금병창, 소리 한대목 등등으로 해설이 곁들여진 시간. 흥보가 박타는 대목 등을 들으며 즐거운 시간을 보냈다. 쑥대머리를 부른다음, 그 쑥대머리가 무었인지 하는 질문이 나왔는데, 바로 쑥대밭이 되었다는 표현처럼 머리가 흐트러져 쑥대머리가 되었다는 말이라고 한다. 춘향의 머리가 쑥대머리가 된 대목이었다.

알란 튜링이라는 수학자가 게이라는 이유로 박해받았던 점을 현재 영국수상이 사과하는 성명서를 냈다.

그는 컴퓨터가 생각할 수 있다는 점에 착안했고 제2차 세계대전 때 독일의 암호를 해독하는 실력을 보였으나 게이라는 이유로 1952년 박해를 받았다고 한다.

1954년 독이 묻은 사과를 베어물고 자살했다는데, 이 한 입 베어문 사과 모양이 애플 컴퓨터 로고라고도 하는데.....

The Prime Minister has released a statement on the Second World War code-breaker, Alan Turing, recognising the “appalling” way he was treated for being gay.

Alan Turing, a mathematician most famous for his work on breaking the German Enigma codes, was convicted of ‘gross indecency’ in 1952 and sentenced to chemical castration.

Gordon Brown’s statement came in response to a petition posted on the Number 10 website which has received thousands of signatures in recent months.

2009 has been a year of deep reflection - a chance for Britain, as a nation, to commemorate the profound debts we owe to those who came before. A unique combination of anniversaries and events have stirred in us that sense of pride and gratitude which characterise the British experience. Earlier this year I stood with Presidents Sarkozy and Obama to honour the service and the sacrifice of the heroes who stormed the beaches of Normandy 65 years ago.

And just last week, we marked the 70 years which have passed since the British government declared its willingness to take up arms against Fascism and declared the outbreak of World War Two. So I am both pleased and proud that, thanks to a coalition of computer scientists, historians and LGBT activists, we have this year a chance to mark and celebrate another contribution to Britain’s fight against the darkness of dictatorship; that of code-breaker Alan Turing.

Turing was a quite brilliant mathematician, most famous for his work on breaking the German Enigma codes. It is no exaggeration to say that, without his outstanding contribution, the history of World War Two could well have been very different. He truly was one of those individuals we can point to whose unique contribution helped to turn the tide of war.

The debt of gratitude he is owed makes it all the more horrifying, therefore, that he was treated so inhumanely. In 1952, he was convicted of ‘gross indecency’ - in effect, tried for being gay. His sentence - and he was faced with the miserable choice of this or prison - was chemical castration by a series of injections of female hormones. He took his own life just two years later.

Thousands of people have come together to demand justice for Alan Turing and recognition of the appalling way he was treated. While Turing was dealt with under the law of the time and we can’t put the clock back, his treatment was of course utterly unfair and I am pleased to have the chance to say how deeply sorry I and we all are for what happened to him. Alan and the many thousands of other gay men who were convicted as he was convicted under homophobic laws were treated terribly. Over the years millions more lived in fear of conviction.

I am proud that those days are gone and that in the last 12 years this government has done so much to make life fairer and more equal for our LGBT community. This recognition of Alan’s status as one of Britain’s most famous victims of homophobia is another step towards equality and long overdue.

But even more than that, Alan deserves recognition for his contribution to humankind. For those of us born after 1945, into a Europe which is united, democratic and at peace, it is hard to imagine that our continent was once the theatre of mankind’s darkest hour.

It is difficult to believe that in living memory, people could become so consumed by hate - by anti-Semitism, by homophobia, by xenophobia and other murderous prejudices - that the gas chambers and crematoria became a piece of the European landscape as surely as the galleries and universities and concert halls which had marked out the European civilisation for hundreds of years. It is thanks to men and women who were totally committed to fighting fascism, people like Alan Turing, that the horrors of the Holocaust and of total war are part of Europe’s history and not Europe’s present.

So on behalf of the British government, and all those who live freely thanks to Alan’s work I am very proud to say: we’re sorry, you deserved so much better.
