전원 교향곡

오늘 아침엔 이사하는 과정에서 텐테이블 바늘끝이 부러져버린 걸 알았다. 주욱 미끄러져 내려간다. 그래서 챔발로로 연주한 트레버 피녹의 골드베르그를 듣지 못했다. 하는 수 없이 오래된 시디를 고르던 중 칼뵘의 베토벤 6번 전원 연주를 듣게되었다. 소편성의 실내악을 주로 들어와서 교향곡을 듣기는 참 오랫만이었다.

베토벤의 전원은 처음 그것을 들었을때 처럼 여전히 나에게 "대단하다, 굉장하다, 엄청나다"와 같은 무한한 어떤 것에 대한 경험을 하게 만든다. 6번 전원 교향곡은 소리들이 엄청난 규모를 가지고 나를 흔들어 놓는다. 다른 작곡가(어쩌면 아직 내가 즐기지 못하는 말러의 교향곡들은 예외일지도..)들의 교향곡에서 느낄 수 없는 거대한 소리를 나는 베토벤의 6번에서 느낀다.

첫 악장이 시작되는 순간부터 나는 정신을 차릴 수가 없게된다. 연주가 끝날때까지 나를 온갖것들로 가득 채우는 소리, 마치 내가 전혀 새로운 공간, 세계를 접하는 듯한 소리, 그런 소리를 전원 교향곡 속에서 듣는 것같다. 아마도 고전 음악에서 나는 베토벤의 전원을 "위대한 소리"라고 부르고싶다.

This is Bob's old photo taken in Sausalito, CA. Ramp came down from sidewalk off main street. And I asked him for me to post this image. I think this is much better than mine. A rare case that I experienced this year.

Hohum....now I find this, the intact quality, Bob. Do you know how happy my eyes are now? This is awesome picture which I would place at the cover of my x-photo collection. You know..... this really moves me. Remove the white lines at the bottom and the top and ask some decent printer you know well to print this to hang it on the wall. If the boys were your children or my children, I could live with that frozen moment for the rest of my life. This is a rare case for me to experience considerable emotional impact from watching photos.

My eyes start from the end of the railing in the foreground watching little shoes and balloons then moves to the wooden dock covered with sheet for comfort of feet. Parents or older brother might have done that for younger ones not to get hurt. Then I see a big wood post for keeping boats in the dock and moves to another post in the left knowing the older brother might have overpowered younger ones' fear of water. Those two pillars make the scene look secure. The straight lines of dock and many many pillars are nice because our life moves straight to death like their little boat moves on to somewhere. Someone cries and someone enjoys.

This one hits my head and shake my bosom silently like a certain smell instantly takes our mind to somewhere. I am too conscious of solid techniques when shooting, so mine usually tends to get sharp in regard to expressing something but that blocks me to purely enjoy taking photos. I create tensions and pursue extreme composition just to evade normality and be different. But watching this, I come to think about what I have done so far not leaving a photo like this. Yes, this is a masterpiece. A lot of people (including myself) think they are doing good from getting lots of points or getting visual that they wanted. But most of them lacks what this has. I don't see any life in them. They are empty, you know, just piles of cliches. My eyes are wet so wet. yours caresses my soul and keep me in its comfort. That's what photography is. Watching lots of images this morning, I came to see many photos edited for vignetting effect. I rarely do it because I just want to keep pictures intact as much as possible. So I tried it on the previous one plus lens correction edit to make the pillars look straight. What do you think of this compared with the former? If better, what made you feel or think so? Or is this much worse than the previous one? I do this because I know I value your opinions. I am curious to know. Anything is welcome from 3TD to 3TU. Thanks for your watching, Puchong

I really like the concept of this image. I did not see the first though. For me I think a crop would simplify this version further, crop out the left side to eliminate the distracting ground and crop the right side to the start of the outer edge of the post. To apply an effective vignett in photoshop, create a new blank layer and change the blend mode to softlight. Using the eliptical marque set to 50 px for this image drag the very top left corner to the bottom right corner, now inverse that selection and usng the bucket tool fill the selection with black. Now reduce the layer opacity to 20-25 % as a general rule for a natural looking effect.

Funny how I can pick your images from this site seeing just the thumbnails and without any further look at the names and authors. You have a very strong personal signature. Wrt your questions: I think the lines should be straight, to stress the contrast with the little girl. I like the image contrast very much, but maybe the vignetting effect should be just a little bit less... I personally use vignetting for portraits, but try to do it in a way that you can't see if you don't know it (and even if you do, it's very hard to notice it). But anyway I think this photo would benefit from very slight vignetting.

Hi Puchong, to my mind the straighten pillars gives them a more mathematical straight look, they stand upright and look more solid with cold physics implied and thus gives a colder maybe more oppressing feeling; this is also emphasized by the vignetting that darkens them. What I like about the vignetting is that it pushes the viewers eye to your subject, maybe you could also give a try of vignetting without straightening the pillars? To me, your previous version had a more optimistic touch, but that's only my personal opinion. Kind Regards, Jan

Beautiful modernist (as opposed to modern) approach. Good framing of the subject. Making the pillars straight? Seems out for this image. Good expression, good minimal composition. It's perfect the way it is.

Excellent photo Puchong. I like the square format and B&W choice. Then I like the girl pose and her position between those two wood poles. Remembers me about my childhood ...O! I forgot about your question.So...there is a slightly difference between those two but it is insignificant, I like them both. It's all about the very thin border in personal taste.

A nice POV, dad, from between the lines. Interesting details for swinging all around the format. Unlike version 2 this one is over all clearer and details are better defined in the darks. I don't really see the straightening effect. Both versions look sturdy since the horizontal line is straight.

Thank you Jay for your comment, yes, I retained the original quality here just cloning out some butts on the ground. And I wanted to compare viewers' opinion between two versions. I made the latter more popular-looking with enhanced contrast and vignetting. That's why this has more detail in the dark pillars. And here 28mm focal length has two curving wood pillars in the foreground. They are slightly distorted and I corrected them with lens distortion tool. With two submissions, I get to know more opinions on the same scene. Thank you, Puchong

Very sweet image that could generate a lot of different stories. I like the angle and the minimal distractions around her. The only suggestion I would have is to maybe clone out the dark areas of the ground in the upper left because it draws my eye away from this delightful young lady.

I like it! Great. It have strong visual impact - and interesting visual story. Strong black "lines" is a little scary. So - there is strong emotions but not clear - deeper story. Maybe i am wrong - but that is my reaction. I said that I like your style.
