<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: center">제천 시가지에서 북쪽 용두산(871m) 남쪽 기슭에 있다. </P>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: center">우리나라에서 가장 오래된 저수지 중의 하나로, </P>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><U>충청북도 기념물 제11호이다</U>. </P>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"> </P>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: center">신라 진흥왕 때 우륵(于勒)이 처음 방죽을 쌓았으며, </P>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: center">그로부터 700여 년 뒤인 고려시대에 고을현감 박의림(朴義林)이 다시 견고하게 쌓았고 </P>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: center">그후 1457년(세조 3)에 체찰사(體察使)로 부임한 정인지(鄭麟趾)가 크게 보수공사를 했다.</P>
