Differences of Essay Writing in English, Korean

About 500 non-native English teachers are getting the opportunity to learn new writing techniques this week at the Suwon Campus of Kyung Hee University.

An intensive three-day educational conference, which began Wednesday and wraps up Friday, is the Korea Secondary English Teachers' Association's (KOSETA) determined response to the latest news of Korea's poor performance on the International English Language Testing System, sponsored by the British Council.

The 2008 proficiency test ranked South Korea second from the bottom, ahead of only the United Arab Emirates. South Korea achieved an average score of 5.39 out of a possible 9 points. In contrast, the United Kingdom ranked first with an average score of 8.1, followed by South Africa with 7.51.

The test averages the scores of writing, reading, listening and speaking sections. South Korea's score in writing was the lowest of all the participating countries with a 5.08.

The organization plans on using American essay-teaching styles at the conference for the prose writing segments, while employing English Newspapers in Education (ENIE) to teach news article writing. Park Chang-seok, a pioneer of the ENIE-teaching style and English media professor at Kyung Hee University, gave an introductory address at the conference Wednesday.

The conference is aimed at providing teachers with the knowledge to both analyze and write in styles aimed toward international testing systems, such as the SATs, TOEFL and the TOEIC.

According to professor Park, a former managing editor of The Korea Times, Korean and English styles of writing are both unique in their conceptual approaches, due to the differences in cultural and historical backgrounds. Whereas Westerners speak directly by beginning with their main points, Korean models favor rhetorical expressions with conclusive endings.

It is important to recognize this fundamental difference, in order to recognize the effects background has on writing. The conference combines knowledge of the cultural gap and overcomes this with universally acknowledged priorities that all works need ― well thought out organization and a clear sense of purpose, he said. The following is the gist of Park's presentation at the conference.

English Essay Writing

American essays are taught to be written in three basic styles: informative, persuasive or creative. The informative essay is often descriptive and narrative, working toward a purely educational end. Persuasive writing presents an argument that seeks to convince the reader of a conviction. Examples include editorials that compare and contrast, or use cause and effect methods. Creative writing's goal is to express the author's ideas, such as in novels or plays.

Conveying ideas clearly is one of the biggest obstacles in writing an essay. Organization is important to this, but one simple acronym that serves as a helpful reminder is "KISS," which stands for keep it short and simple.

Most English essays retain a basic structure, which can be organized in a simple outline before beginning the rough draft. This will help de-clutter the mind and find the main points of the essay.

Essays are typically structured on an introduction, the main body and a strong conclusion. The main body is comprised of paragraphs, which should focus on one idea each. For the conclusion, the last sentence is the most important, as it is the last line left in the reader's mind. It should echo the introduction, but provoke a new idea that wraps up the ideas as a whole. The conclusion should be supported by the preceding paragraphs ― it is not the place to bring in a surprising plot twist.

Remember to keep the essay interesting as well. Three main factors in a good essay are originality, enthusiasm and clarity. Do not plagiarize, have unclear or unorganized thoughts, and stay away from filler information and padding.

English Newspapers in Education

English newspapers employ a markedly different style of writing than essays do, but the concision of language and logical organization of news articles can serve as great learning tools. Journalistic pieces follow a more or less regulated style of writing, in an endeavor to uniform standards internationally. Some of the characteristics include the omission of certain articles and pronouns, standardized abbreviations and the removal of any subjective vocabulary that could seen as bias.

This strict style of writing is difficult to master, but the resulting works that can be produced exemplify organization, logic and concision. Hard news stories in particular can help develop students' and teachers' rational thinking skills, and hone in on the essentials of writing.

Using newspapers in the classroom is cost-effective, as they are cheaper than textbooks and novels. They also provide up-to-date information on current events in a simplified language that can be quickly grasped.

The "inverted pyramid" technique for hard news stories reflects the priority-based structure that presents the most important facts in the lead ― the first sentence or paragraph of an article ― with the least important information left for the end of the story.

This method of writing was originally created in order to expedite a more efficient process in newspaper layouts. If there was not enough space on a page, editors could simply trim off the last few paragraphs of an article while being assured that nothing important was being left out.

There are several types of news articles that use different styles of writing, similar to how the essays have different categories.

The lead of the story is therefore the most important paragraph, the measurement of which has a different definition than essay writing. Paragraphs in news articles are very short, sometimes even a sentence long. While essays present paragraphs that focus on delving into a developed idea, newspaper paragraphs focus on a single aspect or thought, then move on to the next one. Journalism should be objective by nature, so longer paragraphs are not needed to convince, prove or describe. A news article should only serve to inform and in the clearest way possible.

Leads should answer as many of the main six questions as possible: "Who, What, When, Where, Why and How?" The rest of the article's information is extra and should follow accordingly in order of importance and relevancy.

Korean writing uses the opposite technique of the inverted pyramid. While English newspapers use deductive reasoning to come to a conclusion, Korean news articles first present specific information before giving the broader picture, and details come before the main idea.

Practice

Spending just 15 minutes a day reading English newspapers will help in fluency and understanding the different writing system. Use a method called "previewing," which means scanning a paper's stories for an idea of what the day's news is about.

First, spend a short amount of time analyzing the photos on a single page, the headlines then the sub-headlines. Next, read the first and last sentences. The reader should already know most of the information that he or she needs, just from doing this. Especially well-written articles will have all of the information in the lead.

Afterward, skim through the reading quickly, spending no more than 30 seconds on it. Names, numbers and off-set style type will jump out, providing the details of the story.

Stop to think about what has been read and whether or not there is useful knowledge. Decide what information in the article would be important to a reader ― what the reader decides they are looking for will bring a surprising difference in how he or she reads and approaches the story.

This whole process should take less than a couple of minutes, but can prove useful in increasing critical reading comprehension. Try previewing the whole newspaper, previewing each page. Gauge how much information was gathered from the exercise, then go back and read the articles to see how accurate the information intake was through the preview.

7 Steps for Essay Writing
English essays approach story telling differently than Korean-language essays. Generally, Westerners tell the main points of each story directly in the beginning, coming to a conclusion through deductive reasoning. Koreans tend to save the main points for last, which are found through inductive reasoning. The key to writing a good essay is interest, organization and clarity.

(1) Pick a topic

(2) Draft an outline of the subject's main ideas

(3) First write the introduction

(4) Write the body with each paragraph focusing on one idea

(5) Work on a strong conclusion

(6) Revise and double-check that sentences reflect your initial ideas

(7) Edit and Proofread. Check for grammatical and typographical errors

Tips for News Writing
English Newspapers in Education can help teachers and students hone their rational and analytical skills. Journalistic writing is very concise and normally uses the inverted pyramid to structure stories in a top-down technique. In this format, the lead is often the first sentence or paragraph of an article, and should convey the main points of the story.

◆ 효과적인 기억법

전문가들은 "기억을 잘 하는 사람들의 공통적인 습관은 반복"이라고 말한다. 왜냐하면 반복 자극하면 두뇌의 해마에서 시냅스(신경세포가 연결되는 부위)가 강화되기 때문이다.

사람은 평균적으로 20일이 지나면 기억한 내용의 80%를 망각하는데 이 기간이 되기 전에 반복학습을 하는 게 더 효과적이라는 설도 있다. 가령 오늘 기억해야 할 일이 있었다면 1시간 뒤 기억을 반복한 다음 자기 전에 다시 기억한다면 거의 잊어버리지 않는다는 것이다. 이밖에도 전문가들은 다음과 같은 기억법들을 제시한다.

▶▶시각화하라

연구 결과에 의하면 인간의 두뇌는 좌우측으로 나뉘어져 있고 언어와 시각을 관장하는 뇌는 상반된다. 따라서 좌반구와 우반구를 동시에 사용한다면 그 중 하나만 사용하는 것보다 기억효과가 훨씬 더 증진된다. 예를 들어 새로운 얼굴을 기억할 때 그 사람의 헤어 스타일이 어떻더라, 누구를 닮았더라 등의 말을 붙여 놓으면 훨씬 기억이 오래 간다. 또 어떤 지명 10개를 외울 때에도 단순히 10개를 외우는 것보다는 지도상 위치를 생각해 가면서 외우는 것이 훨씬 쉽다. 다소 추상적인 내용이라도 그림이나 도표, 약도 형식으로 이미지화시키면 더 기억하기 좋다.

▶▶여러 감각을 활용하라

기억대상의 시각적 내용(문자)을 청각이나 운동자극(입술이나 혀, 손의 운동) 등을 활용해 공감각화하면 기억하기 좋다. 혼자말로 중얼거리는 것도 한 가지 방법이다. 어떤 특정한 향수 냄새를 맡으면 그 향수를 항상 뿌렸던 여인(또는 남자)이 기억나는 것은 후각(嗅覺)중추가 단기기억을 조절하는 변연계에 포함되어 있기 때문이다.

▶▶단서를 활용하라

기억할 때 사용하는 중요한 책략 중의 하나는 연상(聯想)이다. 연상이란 A를 보면 B가 생각나는 식이다. 집에 도착하면 어떤 일을 꼭 해야 하는데 잊어버릴 것 같을 때, 가지고 다니는 가방에 끈을 매달아 놓거나 휴대폰이 울리게 해 놓으면 집에 도착했을 때 그 일을 기억해 낼 수 있다.

▶▶불필요한 것을 외우지 말자

컴퓨터의 메모리가 한정되어 있는 것처럼 인간 뇌의 기억력도 어느 정도 용량이 한정되어 있다.

특히 작업기억의 용량은 한정되어 있다. 따라서 쓸데없는 것을 입력하지 않는 것도 더 필요한 것을 외우는 데 도움이 될 수 있다. 예를 들어 어떤 사람은 기억력 증진을 위해 전화번호를 100개 이상 외우기도 하는데 이것이 기억력을 증진시키기보다는 오히려 기억 장소를 차지하여 정작 필요한 기억을 못하게 할 수도 있다.

▶▶정보의 유입 속도를 조절하라

정보가 흘러가는(유입되는) 속도가 상대적으로 너무 빠르면 뇌가 소화를 못해 기억하지 못한다. 속독을 하여 읽은 책의 내용이 오래 기억되지 않는 것도 이 때문이다.

▶▶먼저 이해하라

이해하면서 기억한 것이 단순 암기보다 더 오래간다.

◆ 기억력을 좋게 하는 생활습관

먼저 전문가들은 “적당히 쉬고 스트레스를 적극적으로 푸는 것이 기억력 향상에 중요하다”고 말한다. 휴식없이 공부나 일만 할 경우 과중한 스트레스에 의해 뇌에서 글루 코코르티코이드 호르몬이 급격히 늘어나는데 이것이 기억의 회복을 방해한다는 것이다.

이 호르몬은 단기기억이 장기기억으로 저장 되는 과정을 방해하는 것으로 알려져 있다.

심한 정신적 충격 등 과도한 스트레스는 일시적 기억 상실을 일으키기도 한다. 평소 아무리 열심히 공부해도 시험 스트레스 때문에 몽땅 잊어버리는 현상도 이 때문이라는 것이다.

이밖에 전문가들이 권하는 기억력에 좋은 생활습관은 다음과 같다.

▶▶금주와 금연

인체 중 술의 영향에 가장 민감한 곳은 바로 뇌이다. 술을 마시면 일단 기분이 좀 좋아지지만 결국 여러 가지 악영향을 미친다. 코골이와 수면무호흡증을 악화시켜 뇌의 산소공급을 현저히 떨어뜨려 뇌세포에 막대한 악영향을 끼칠 수 있다. 필름이 끊길 정도의 폭음은 이미 뇌세포에 손상이 갔다는 증거이고 이런 일이 자주 반복되면 알코올성 치매에 이르게 된다. 또 과도한 흡연은 니코틴에 의한 신경독성(毒性) 외에도 혈중 이산화탄소 농도 증가, 모세 뇌혈관의 혈류 악화를 유발해 기억력에 좋지 않다.

▶▶규칙적이고 충분한 수면

밤낮이 바뀌어 자거나 3~4시간 이하의 수면이나 잠을 깊이 못자는 사람은 기억력이 저하된다. 이런 사람은 낮에도 항상 머리가 맑지 않다고 호소한다. 수험생 중 ‘4당5락’ 등의 적은 수면량으로 성적을 올리려는 것은 학습시간을 늘리기는 하지만 집중력 및 기억력 저하로 오히려 역효과를 나타낼 수 있다.

▶▶악기와 음악

악기를 연주하면 특히 우뇌 피질을 자극하게 되고 나아가 신경망을 통해 전체적인 대뇌 활동을 증가시켜 어린이의 기억력 증대에 이바지한다고 본다. \그러나 모차르트의 음악을 듣기만 해도 기억력이 좋아지고 학습 능률이 오른다는 '모차르트 효과'는 아직 논란이 많다. 미국 어바인 소재 캘리포니아대 프랜시스 라우셔 교수팀은 3~4살 어린이들에게 피아노 레슨을 시킨 결과, 퍼즐 맞추기 실력이 34% 향상됐다는 연구 결과를 발표한 바 있다. 연구팀은 피아노 레슨이 수학과 과학에 필요한 시ㆍ공간 추론능력과 관련있는 신경세포 사이의 특별한 연결망을 발달시킨다고 추측했다.

▶▶독서 및 외국어 공부

독서를 하게 되면 자연히 앞의 내용과 뒤의 내용이 연결이 되고(장기기억) 시각적 정보를 뇌에 저장시키는 단기기억 훈련 효과가 있다. 외국어를 배우는 것도 부수적으로 기억력을 증가시키는 방법이 될 수 있다.

▶▶운동

걷기, 달리기 등 운동을 규칙적으로 하면 기억력이 좋아진다. 뇌세포는 혈류를 통해 오는 산소와 영양분으로 기능을 유지한다. 이는 마치 식물이 뿌리로부터 오는 물과 영양분을 먹고 자라는 것과 마찬가지이다. 운동은 뇌혈류를 활성화시키는 작용을 한다.

▶▶낙천적 성격

우울한 기분으로는 뭐든 잘 외워지지 않는다. 이는 감정 조절에 연관된 변연계가 기억에 중요한 역할을 하기 때문이다. 되도록 낙천적으로 살고 즐거운 마음가짐을 가지는 게 기억력에 좋다. 특히 폐경 후 우울증은 여성호르몬 결핍과 겹쳐서 기억력이 설상가상으로 나빠질 수 있다.

▶▶메모 습관

인간의 기억력에는 한계가 있기 때문에 끊임없는 메모가 매우 중요하다. 메모는 생각이 날 때 즉각 해야 하고 나중으로 미루면 잊는 경우가 많다.

▶▶마음의 평화

끊임없이 걱정하는 사람은 일반적으로 기억력이 떨어진다. 기억장애 클리닉에 기억력이 좋지 않다며 찾아오는 중년들의 대부분은 걱정과 근심으로 가득 차 있는사람들이다. 이들은 집중력이 떨어진다. 그러므로 단기기억과 작업기억 능력이 현저히 저하된다.

◆ 기억력에 좋은 식생활

시험 보는 날 아침에 식사를 하는 것이 좋을까 거르는 것이 좋을까. 일본 규슈대학의 리 연구팀은 생쥐에게 탄수화물의 일종인 포도당을 투여할 때 학습에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 조사했다. 그 결과 학습하기 전에 혈당 수치를 높이면 학습 효과가 향상된다는 점이 확인됐다.

2시간 전 포도당 투여, 학습효과 높여

흥미로운 점은 포도당을 투여하는 시간에 따라 효과가 다르게 나타난다는 점이다. 가장 큰 효과를 보인 투여시간은 학습하기 2시간 전이었으며 1, 3, 5시간 전에는 효과가 떨어졌다. 연구팀은 식사가 학습이나 기억에 미치는 효과가 쥐나 사람이나 비슷하게 나타날 것이라고 추측한다.

엽산(비타민 B 복합체의 일종)이나 비타민 E(토코페롤)의 섭취가 부족하면 기억력에 좋지 않다. 엽산은 특히 동물성 음식에 많지만 과도한 동물성 지방은 기억력에 좋지 않다. 이 외에도 등푸른생선 기름인 오메가 지방산도 기억력에 좋다는 설이 있다.

노인의 경우 식사를 규칙적으로 하는 것이 기억력에 좋다는 연구 결과가 있으며, 보리, 감자가 기억력을 향상시킨다는 보고가 있다. 그러나 채식만 하는 것도 비타민 B12, 엽산의 결핍을 초래하기 쉬워 좋지 않다.

약으로 기억력을 좋게 할 수 있을까. (징코민·녹차도 아직 효과 입증 안돼 !!)

유감스럽게도 아직 기억력을 획기적으로 증가시키는 약은 양약, 생약, 한약을 통틀어 입증된 것이 거의 없다. 은행잎 추출물(징코민 등)이나 녹차도 기억력 증강에 뚜렷한효과는 입증되지 않았다. 알츠하이머 병 치료제 중에서는 '메만틴(memantine)'이라는새로운 약만이 환자들의 기억력을 호전시킨다는데 아직 국내에서는 시판되고 있지 않다.

집중력을 개선시킴으로써 기억력을 간접적으로 증가시키는 약제가 있는데 이는 집중력 장애 환자에겐 효과가 있다. 하지만 기억력에 대한 신약 개발이 활발해 수 년 이내에 기억력 증강제가 시판될 것이라 하니 기대해 볼 만하다. 경희대 한병병원 신경정신과에서는 건뇌탕을 기억력 증진 목적으로 사용하고 있다.

Cyber English Education Links Students Around World

Internet technology has produced cyber classrooms where students from around the world can participate and interact with each other. Especially, when it comes to English education, the online space could be a terrific opportunity as learners can experience various English accents and share different ways of speaking.

An Australian professor has been running online classes since 2004 under the slogan ``Education without Boundaries, the World Is My Classroom.''

``Many students can view and attend the cyber classroom at the same time. Online classrooms are a valuable research tool for those seeking to document the way students apply themselves and learn a language, and also provide a learning tool for students of English who have progressive English lessons for review and replay,'' said Marguerite Carstairs, an English professor at Konyang University in Daejeon.

The professor, who taught at primary and secondary schools as well as universities in Australia for more than 20 years, is currently running trial online English classes on Active English Speaking.com at 9:30 pm and 11 pm on weekdays. During the classes that can accommodate up to 99 students, English learners can discuss news articles on various social issues. Also, some other classes deal with Australian history and travel stories.

``Students from Turkey, India, the Philippines, China, Brazil and so on can watch and learn together from one lesson and follow the lesson as a review or replay, as the lesson is recorded and the recording is available at no charge to those participating,'' Carstairs told The Korea Times in an interview. ``This is bringing the classroom into the home, school and world, and making education an international experience.''

During the one-hour lesson, the teacher explains about the topic of the class for the first 20 minutes and students then discuss it for another 20 minutes. Some students have the opportunity to present their opinions for 10 minutes and 10 minutes of free time follows. Students can view the teacher and interact and chat with other students using a comment board and chat line.

The text of the lesson is presented in Power Point. Students can ask questions or make comments on the board, as well as on the chat line. The teacher also has at her control, her own database of photos, images and documents that can be downloaded during the lesson. Teachers fully utilize the whole Internet and computer tools.

Carstairs, who is scheduled to go back her home country soon, plans to run cyber classes everyday on weekdays from March. She charges $2-$10 depending on the class, and an annual membership for $99.

Newspaper Is Good Textbook

The Australian professor, who has taught English in Asia including China and Korea for four years, stressed the importance of textbooks for her English classes. Hence, she has introduced ``Content Based Learning'' that uses content as a base, and provides the opportunity for students to extend beyond the provided content, or work within and around the content at their own pace

``Any group has individual differences and competencies, and an individual set of past experiences and learning styles. It is impossible to write a textbook that suits everybody in the class at the same time. We need some base to study around, and this is the map and the lesson plan, and we utilize a textbook which is at the base,'' she said.

For example, when teaching about the study of weather, the teacher can base the lesson a book and expand it to pictures, photos and online activities using weather maps and weather news.

``The textbook was the source, but the learning experience moved far beyond the textbook. Now I remember the two page spread from my geography book quite clearly, but I remember far more the cloud lessons I gained from lying on the grass watching the clouds and drawing the different skies I saw, then referring the drawings to my textbook, and when I found a cloud that was not in the two page spread, going further to learn what that cloud was and why it was different,'' she said.

From this point of view, she believes newspapers could be the best textbooks among many sources around. She started to use newspapers as a textbook when she taught in China a few years ago. ``There were no English materials and I was expected to write it all for every class and every lesson. I started using online books and text from the Internet, and based my lessons on them. I had students struggling with Shakespeare and other `free' copyright free texts.''

Then she discovered that China Daily had an English page and started to use it for her classes there. ``The first instances were simple. I used a paragraph from the newspaper, and built my lesson from the selected content. Then I went online and asked friends to send me Australian and any other newspapers in English, and I used those as my base,'' she said.

``I had a table with all kinds of newspapers, and had the students reading whatever they could every day for 20 minutes as a start to the class. I was head of the school and had nobody to tell me I should be using a set text, and how to teach, and I developed an entire `Content Based Course' using newspapers and articles from the newspapers.''

She continued ``Content from regular textbooks often are not of interest to the student, and gets repetitive. The same content is always there and not always of interest, especially in situations where older students and adults learning English are forced to go through some very junior focused reading based on the assumption that new learners are also at pre-school levels of intelligence. Newspapers provide a wide range of reading material from front page, to sport, to international, national and entertainment and comics, as well as letters to the editor and fashion. Each student reads the part of the newspaper that they are interested in, and reports one item they found interesting.''

The professor plans to run classes using newspapers for 15-20 weeks this year and she gave instructions for the classes.
Students take a newspaper and look though it on their own, undirected, for 15 minutes each session. If they cannot read, they look at the pictures. They are permitted to use highlighters to underline anything they wish. Students read one newspaper heading to the class in the first weeks or talk about one picture. After a few weeks, they can either read or talk or both. Some students will start talking when they are ready.

They have a maximum speaking time of one minute. With larger classes, students read a headline to a partner. Every student must speak every lesson. Each student works at his own pace. The task is to read one heading, regardless of the number of words. There is no teacher comment in any of this, except 'good' or similar praise. The student knows whether they are good or whether they cannot do the task. All students must participate. That is the rule. They can say one word, maybe the name of the newspaper, if they wish, or read a paragraph. The task is read one headline.
