CIMdata's latest opinion poll asked if the ecocomy had impacted company PLM programs this year. The results were better than expected. The first concerned the progress of PLM programs. More than a third of respondents (37%) indicated that there had been no change. This indicates that many companies have remaind committed to their PLM initiatives and are continuing to acquire and deploy PLM solution. Anothter 18% indicated that the situation had improved and their situation had worsened and their PLM programs were being delayed or reduced in scope. The fact that 75%+ indicated continuing progress reflects management's understanding of the importance of PLM to help a company maintain or improve its competitve position in times of stres and also that PLM can help reduce the overall cost of product development.

The second question asked if companies had changed the diretion (focus, scope) of their PLM program. 52% responded that there had been co change in direction while 27% indicated that there had been changes in priorities to focus on supporting specific business areas. The remaining 21% indicated that threr had been miscellaneous direction changes. These results would indicate that most companies are following their PLM plan with the confidence that it should provide the support they need. They are evaluating how PLM can best support specific business areas and adjusting their programs to focus on those areas in which they can get the biggest return on investment.

Over the past several months, many of our industrial client have us how the current economic climate has impacted the status of PLM implementation initiatives. In order to better understand the current situation, CIMdata is in the process of analyzing, relasing and reporting the rusults of a set of CIMdata Polls converned with this topic. Jauary's CIMdata Poll asked participants how the current stressful economis times have impacted their PLM programs. As reported last month, 63% of the participants reported that their PLM program has been negatively impacted in some manner. Last month's CIMdata Poll asked poll participants what was most important regarding their PLM initiative. In this poll, CIMdata sought to understand the main concerns held by PLM technologists during the current stressful business climate. The results proved to be rather interesting.

As illustrated in the graph of the poll results, just over half of the participants indicated that they were concerned that management wouln't, or perhaps doesn't, view their PLM initiative as strategic to the business during these stressful economic times. One could easily argue that if a company's management team views PLM to be strategic to its business, then they would be less likely to cut its budget, remove resources, limit training, put it on hold, etc. However, the January poll indicates that the majority of programs have already been nigatively impacted. This points to the apparent need to better educate management on the importance of PLM and how PLM can benefit the company during stressful as well as non-stressful business cycles. Finally, it is interesting to note that the questions that asked about specific budget-cutting effects were not selected in any large percentage, as compared to the non-budget issues. This re-enforces that the poll partivipants are much less concerned about ractically-oriented budget cuts that can be lived through, than they are that management doesn't view PLM as strategic to the business. CIMdata's recommendation based on these results is that PLM teams should continue to regulatly update their management teams on the benefits being realized by the business due to continued use and adoption of PLM.

Analysis : In the light of these current uncertain economic times, it is of no surprise that many companies are drastically curtailing spending. What is of interested is where are companies cutting spending (i.e., from which projects or what types of projets). In order to find out, CIMdata recently conducted an opinion poll that asked participants how have the current stressful economic times impacted their PLM programs. When discarding the "None of the above" responses, approximately 63% of the remaining respondents reported that their PLM program has been negatively impacted in some manner (e.g., 14% reported that their project was stopped, 9% reported that their project's scope had been reduced, and 15% reported that they have experienced a reduction of resources availability). These responses all point to the fact that a large percentage of the participant's PLM programs, like many other business initiatives we read about in today's news, have not been immune from the budget cutting knife. This in itself is not that interesting.

However, what is significantly more interesting is the fact that the vast majority of the participant's indicated that their programs are continuing forward in some manner. In fact, it should be noted that 37% of the poll's participants indicated that their PLM program has been positively impacted (e.g., almost 17% indicatded that their program's speed and/or importance has increased and approximately 14% indicated that they have seen absolutely no impact). These are very positive results, and ones that our upcoming polls will focus on in order to gain additional insight related to how the current uncertain econoic times are impacting PLM's adoption.

Analysis :

The results of CIMdata's latest on-line poll show that just over 50% of responders indicated that their companies have not established metrics to track business, productivity or process improvements related to their PLM solution deployments. However 23% indicated that they had metrics for engineering and another 23% indicated that they had established metrics in other areas (enterprise wide 13%, and other non-engineering or manufacturing 11%).

CIMdata strongly recommends that companies use metrics to track and validate the impact of their PLM solutions on the business. Only by measure can result in incorrect perceptions of the impact of PLM investments on the business and make it difficult to justify further investments. Further, the use of appropriate metrics helps communicate the benefits that PLM provides to individuals and managers within the enterprise that are being affected by PLM-related changes in processes and methods.

While many of the early metrics were focused on the engineering processes and departments, the trend to use enterprise level metrics that look beyond engineering reflects the knowledge that PLM can have a broader impact on a company. Metrics that look at enterprise performance can help management understand both the overall impact of PLM and how it should be positioned compared to other business investments.

Analysis :

The results of last month's poll(what is the primary driver for deploying PLM solutions within your business) indicate that cost savings and cycle time reductions are still the leading drivers for PLM implementations. These two areas represent over 50% of the responders primary drivers(25% for cost savings and 28% for cycle time reductions). These have been the primary drivers for over four years - in a similar CIMdata poll in 2004 over 53% indicated the same primary drivers. New product introduction also remains important with 16% of respondents indicating that it was a primary driver. These results confirm that enterprises are under pressure to new products to markets to market faster while continuing to reduce costs. These pressures reflect the need for companies to improve their profitability and maintain their competitive position through faster delivery of more products.

Improving manufacturability is also an important driver with 14% of respondents indicating it was primary. This is up from just over 3% four years ago and indicates the increasing importance of being able to more efficiency(and more cost effectively) manufacture the increasing number of new or improved products being brought to market. Other factors such as serviceability and regulatory compliance are drivers but at this time less important than cost and time reductions.
