이 책은 몇년전 반스앤노블 서점에서 커피마시며 책들을 뒤적이며 할일없이 시간을 보내다
illustration 도 맘에 들고
( 삽화의 느낌이 whimsical 하다고 보았는데...마치 손재주가 별로 없는 초보자가 그린듯 하지만
신선하고 남다르고 개성있어 볼수록 재밌는 그림삽화)

영문법을 설명한 책이지만 따분해 보이지 않아 pay 를 하고 집에 데려온 책이죠.

소파 옆에 두고 가끔가다 집어들고 읽게될때마다 (그러니까 여러번 읽었단 이야기)
미소가 지어지거나 때로는 깔깔 웃게 되는 (혼자서) 제게는 그런 재미난 책입니다.
( I prefer reading textbooks over novels and non-fictions over fictions so..
많은이들이 아주 재미난 책이라며 동의할것이라고는 기대하지않지만
그래도 여러분에게 recommend 하고 싶어지네요. )

"Do you mind me asking a question?"

그리고

"Do you mind my asking a question?"

위 두문장의 다른 점은 무엇?

뭐...이런 간단하면서도 분명 차이가 있는 거...이런것을 가르쳐주는 책입니다.

이번 일요일도 Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Bank of Hawaii 와 관련된 행사가 있었는지

오늘은 입장료가 Free 였어요.

Charles William Bartlett ( 1860-1940)

일본의 Kofun 시대 (요강: :Chamber Pot ) 으로 추정되는...) :

( 몸체가 두껍고 무거워 ) skill 면 에서 같은 시대 가야 의 작품보다 뒤떨어진다는 설명이 있음

마치 현대의 커피머그를 연상시키는 가야 시대 ( 가야 지역이나 혹은 신라지역)의 stoneware.

(아마도 뜨거운 액체를 담았을거 같다는 설명, 어쩌면 차 ? 일지도...)

이들은 누구 ? 세명의 조선인 선비.

Paul Jacoulet ( 1902-1960 ) (프랑스인 화가 : :프랑스에서 태어나 4살때부터

대학에서 강의하는 아버지를 따라 일본에서 성장, 영어,프렌치,일어에 능통,

프랑스 대사관에서 통역관으로 일함..무척 흥미로운 이력을 갖은분인데 한국을 방문했었나봅니다.?? )

Paul Jacoulet was born in Paris in 1902. From the age of 4 he lived in Japan. His father worked at the Tokyo University as a teacher. The young child Paul was of poor health. But he developed good skills for drawing, music and languages. He spoke Japanese, French and English fluently. At the age of eleven he began painting.

In 1920, Jacoulet began to work for the French Embassy in Tokyo as an interpreter. Paul had a lively interest in Japanese culture and was a frequent guest in the Noh and Kabuki theaters.... "

A you (Chinese: 卣; pinyin: yǒu) is a lidded vessel that was used for liquid offerings by the Chinese of the Zhou and Shang Dynasties. It sometimes lacks taotie in favor of smoother surfaces. Sometimes these vessels are zoomorphic, especially in the form of two owls back to back. Usually the handle of the you is in the form of a loop that attaches on either side of the lid, but it is occasionally a knob in the center of the lid. They can be quadruped or have a single base. Voices from The Other World by Naguib Mahfouz ( translated from Arabic by Raymond Stock )

총 다섯개의 짧은 단편 이야기가 있다. 그리고 읽는데 조금 힘들었다.

아랍어에서 영어로 번역되어 영어로 쓰여져 있는데 이 영어 문장의 뤼듬이 뭐랄까...오래 된 느낌???

구식? 칭송하고 감탄하는 감탄사가 많아서??? 그래도 노벨상을 받은 사람이 쓴거니까 무언가 배울만한게 .있겠지?..

기대를 버리지 않고 끈질기게 읽었다.

그리고 제일 마지막 스토리에 가서야.. 그래. 노벨상 받을만하군..이라 공감하였다.

마지막 이야기는 A Voice from The Other World.

이 아랍 작가의 이름은 Naguib Mahfouz

Naguib Mahfouz was born in 1911 in the crowded Cairo district of Gamaliya.

He studied philosophy at Cairo University,

then worked in various government ministries until his retirement in 1971.

His first three published novels were Khufu's Wisdom (1939),

Rhadopis of Nubia (1943), and Thebes at War (1944), all of which are set in ancient Egypt.

These political and philosophical critiques disguised as historical romances show the unmistakable

signs of a burgeoning literary genius.

He went on to write more than 35 other novel-length works,

plus hundreds of short stories and numerous cinema plots and scenarios,

그럼 Voices From The Other World 라는 책에 실려 있는

다섯개의 단편들 중에서 마지막 스토리 A Voice From The Other World...에 관하여 적어보겠습니다.

tomb ( 무덤) 안에서 I= ( 나)는 글을 쓰고 있습니다. I = 나= 는 어떤 왕자님 (Prince ) 밑에서 사무일을 맡아하던

글을 잘 쓰고 글쓰기를 좋아하던 스물여섯살의 건장한 남자입니다. 이름은 Taw-ty .

그에겐 어머니, 와이프, 아이들이있습니다.

무덤속에서 이 글을 쓰는 그는 자신이 죽은 날을 기억하는 대목으로 시작합니다.

O Lord!

Do I not still remember the day that rent my world between life and death?

(윗 문장에서 rent 는 빌리다.임대하다 .뭐 그런 뜻이 아니라 rend 의 과거형입니다.)

(rend = 쪼개지다, 분열하다, 갈라지다..을 가르다, 분열시키다, ..을 째다, 발기발기 찢다, ..을 부수다)

즉 자신이 죽음을 맞이한날을 기억한다는 뜻이죠.

Yes, on that day I left the Prince's palace just before sunset,

after exhausting efforts which had utterly absorbed me, until the Prince said to me,

"Taw-ty, that's enough work- don't wear yourself out."

그날 (on that day) 해지기 바로 직전 (just before sunset ) 왕자의 palace (궁전, 대저택) 을 나왔습니다.

자신을 몰두하게끔 한 (utterly absorbed me) 심신을 피로하게 하고 고단하게 만든 ( exhausting )

어떤 수고로운 일 ( effort ) 을 마친 후였고요.

그가 그일에 얼마나 몰두하였냐면 왕자가 그에게 (=me) 이제 되었으니 너무 녹초가 될때까지 일하지 말라며

말했을때까지였습니다.

The sun was slanting toward the western horizon,

the endless expanse of the realm of shadows.

The flickerings of its fading rays shook with the shiver of Death

upon the surface of the sacred Nile.

I continued on my accustomed way,

across from the sycamore tree at the southern edge of the village

where my lovely house lies.

그러나 집으로 향하는 중 그는 통증을 느낍니다.

O holy Amon!

What is this aching in my joints and my bones?

그렇게 하여 Taw- ty (= I = 나) 는 집에 도달하지만 마중나온 아내의 품에 쓰러지고

의사가 집을 방문하여 약을 처방하여 약을 먹고 눕지만 기운을 잃고 스물여섯 젊은 나이에

때이르게 찾아오는 죽음을 속수무책 맞이합니다.

과로로 쓰러진 스물여섯의 젊은이...Taw-ty 는

자신이 어떻게 죽음을 맞이했는지 무엇을 보고 생각했는지..계속 써내려갑니다.

영원함안에서 (죽음안에서) ,경계선이나 한계 없이

과거의 매혹들과 현재의 마력과 미래의 갈망 그 사이에 놓여져 있는

다른 것들이 내 앞에 펼쳐 보여지며 지나갔습니다.(spun 은 spin 의 과거형)

The flowers and fields and waters and clouds and food and drink and songs and idea

and love and my children and the Prince's palace and Pharaoh's parties and the money I was paid

and the medals and titles and the honors and the glory,

were drawn before my senses.

( 그 모든것들이 ) 내 감각들앞에 모여 보여졌습니다. (drawn 은 draw 의 과거형)

이 모든게 공허( void ) 로 사라져 버리는건가?

아이들 (little ones) 은 잠이 들고 (잠이 아이들을 압도하고.-overcame 은 overcome 의 과거...라고 표현했음)

My wife lingered about my head, my mother about my feet.

Midnight came and as quickly passed while we remained in this state,

until the baying of jackals startled me with the blue light of dawn.

자정이 오는가 싶더니 또한 재빠르게 지나가버렸고

우리는 그런 상태로 있었다. 재칼의 울부짖음 (baying 짖는소리) 과 여명의 푸른 빛이 나를 소스라치게 놀라게 할때까지.

A bizarre feeling of alarm seized me,

as a sinister silence settled over all.

불길한 침묵 (정적)이 모든것위로 정착하자 위급을 알리는 (alarm ) 기묘한 (bizarre ) 느낌이 나를 휘어잡았다.(seized)

Then I felt my mother's hand gripping my feet as she called in a quavering voice,

" My son, my son!"

My wife screamed,

"Taw-ty, what do you see?"

But I was unable to reply.

Something, no doubt, aroused their apprehension.

Did she see what this was? Did the warning show on my face?

My gaze shifted against my will to the entrance of the room.

The door was locked, yet the Messenger entered.

He entered without needing to open the door.

I knew him without knowing him before;

he was the Messenger of the Hereafter, without any like him.

He approached me in awesome silence and irresistible beauty.

As he did so my eyes were fixed upon him; he was all I could see.

I wanted to call out to him but my tongue would not obey.

He seemed to know my inner desire, for his smile grew broader

, and I recognized him as my escort,

while nothing else remained in my mind.

Chapter Two

The stunning sensation that I had actually died, that I no longer belonged to the realm of the living,

truly overwhelmed me. I was still in my room, and the room was still as it was, so what had happened?

What had changed within me?

My mother and my wife were leaning over my body, when something occurred that I could not doubt, and

it was the most critical thing of all. I was not surprised, and if I had been able to reply to my wife when she

asked me, "Taw-ty, What do you see?" I would have said, " I am dying." But I had lost the power of speech and of other things.

I was not surprised, as I have said, when I felt the depths of Death- as the bed feels the numbing flow of sleep-

completely aware of what was happening.

What could not be doubted is that Death is neither painful nor terrifying, as mortals imagine.

If they knew the truth about it, they would seek it out as they do well-aged wine,

preferring it over all others. For it is not regret or sadness that grips the dying person.

Rather, life appears as something paltry and unimportant when one intuits on the horizon that divine and

joyous light. I was shackled with fetters, then they were smashed.

I was trapped inside a vessel, then I was set free.

I was intensely heavy on the earth, then I shed my bonds and was rid of my weight.

My form was narrow, then I stretched everywhere outward without any bonds.

My sense were limited, then each faculty changed utterly;

I could see all and I could hear all and I could comprehend all, and I could perceive all at once what was above

me and below me and around me- as if I had left my body sprawled before me to take from Creation an entirely new one.

This total transformation that defies description took place in an instant.

Yet, I still felt that I had not quit the room that had witnessed the happiest moments of my previous existence.

It was as though I had been made custodian of my former body until it reached its final rest.

오늘은 부슬비가 가끔씩 내리는 조용한 일요일, 오후에 가야의 ceramics 을 보러 Honolulu Academy of Arts 에 갔습니다.

*** 가야 (Gaya)는 (통합된 하나의) 왕국이 아니었기에 Confederacy 라는 단어를 썼군요.

요즘 K-Drama, Queen Sun Duck , 선덕여왕에서 가야의 문양 (여섯개의 알을 품은 거북이, 육란귀 - 六卵龜- )이

인상깊었던 터라 설명 label 도 사진 찍었습니다.

색이 칠하여지지 않아 담백한 느낌이 순수하고 자연스럽고 멋있게 느껴지더군요. 설명을 읽어보니 제일 첫번째 사진속에 있는

3 handles 이 구부려져 있는 모습은 아마도 덮는 뚜껑이 있었고 뚜껑을 고정시키려 있었을거라 합니다.

그외 사진은 찍지 못했으나 요즘 커피 mug 같이 생긴 모던한 모습의 mug 도 있었고, 설명에는 역시나 뜨거운 liquid 액체를 담는데

사용한 거였을거라는 설명이 쓰여져 있었으니..! 기회가 닿으면 꼬옥 가야의 도자기를 찾아보세요. 추천합니다.

함께 무리지어 있는곳에서 유독 이 도자기가 튀는것 같아 사진을 찍었는데 (특히 손잡이가 있어야 할 부분에 있는 작은 문양때문에) 설명을 읽으니 China 것이라고 쓰여져 있었습니다. ( 요즘처럼 Made in China 라고 아래부분에 쓰여지는것도 아니기에 아마 이 도자기로 인하여 여러 학자들이 고심하였겠죠? )

Elizabeth Keith (1887-1956) 의 판화작품이 한국관에 여럿 전시되어 있었는데 그 중 이것,

푸른빛이 도는 어스름 밤하늘에 별이 총총 박히고

언덕위에서 땔감을 머리에 이고 있는 한 아낙이 서있고 그녀의 치맛자락에서 그리고 나뭇잎에서 잔잔하고 시원한 바람결이

느껴지는 이 그림, 평화로운 마을의 집집마다 불빛이 왠지 한국의 옛모습에 대하여 아련한 그리움을 느끼게 하는군요.

이것은 연꽃문양의 기와 지붕 장식 (물론 가야시대)

위의 두 도자기는 일본관에서 발견 , 위의 작은것은 향을 담는 그릇입니다. 둘 다 조선의 도자기를 사모하던 도공들의 손길이 느껴지지 않나요?

인도와 일본, 중국을 방문한 서양인, Charles William Bartlett ( 1860- 1940 ) 의 아름다운 작품들이 아주 많이 전시되어 있었습니다. watercolor 와 drawings

그의 스케치북도 전시되어 있었는데 한마디로 , 그의 작품들에 반하고 말았습니다.

서너달 전 쯤? apple Iphone 으로 audiobook 형태로 다운로드 받아 산책을 할 때
들으며 다 끝마치게 된 소설인데 이제서야 리뷰를 쓰게 되었습니다.

audiobook 을 읽어주는 분은 영국 엑센트의 젊은 여자분이었고
text 도 함께 다운로드 받았는데 들으면서 함께 읽기에는 약간 곤란하였습니다.

스크롤이 읽어주는 대목을 벗어나기를 반복하여서..

해서 중도에서는 눈으로 읽는것을 포기하고 그냥 귀로 듣게만 되었습니다.

제가 visual 한 사람이라 그런지 ??? audiobook 으로 듣고 있으면 집중을 못할 때가 많았습니다.

산책을 하다 자꾸 같은 찹터를 여러번 듣기도 하고...

책내용은 놀라왔습니다. 첫번째로 저를 놀랍게 한 점은 모던한 내용때문이었어요:

주인공은 young lady . 점점 아버지의 보호에서 벗어나고싶고 못견디게 독립하고 싶어합니다.

그 어느누구의 (아버지나 남편이나 애인이나..) 간섭없이 도움없이

사회에 나가 홀로 스스로 당당히 돈을 벌어 자신을 먹여살릴 뿐만아니라 성공하고 싶어합니다.

그녀는 자립하고 싶어합니다.

그욕구는 그녀안에서 점점 강하여지고... 어느날 짐을 싸들고 집을 뛰쳐나옵니다.

허나 여성이 자립하고 제대도 된 직업을 갖고 high pay를 받으며 성공할 수 있는 것이... 시대적으로 불가능합니다.

소설이 출판된 해 는, 1909 년 이었습니다.

여인들의 그런 욕구와 소망은 지금도 다 이루어지기 힘들기에

현재 진행중이며 이 소설에서 주인공 Ann이 소원하던것들은 지금도 유효합니다.

두번째로 놀라왔던것은 ? 이 글을 쓴 작가가 여성이 아니라 남성이었단거..:)

H.G. Wells.

왜 그가 세월이 많이 흐른 2009년도에도 칭송받을 수 있는 작가인지 이해가 되는 소설이었습니다.

지난 주말에는 Makiki Height 에 있는 Contemporary Musuem 을 다녀왔습니다.

마침 Japanese artist, 요시히로 수다 ( Yoshihiro Suda ) 의 작품 전시 중이었으며

( 1. negative space 의 아름다움 : 작품의 실물이 아닌 작품을 담고 있는 빈공간이 작품이 차지하고 있는 공간에

비하여 상당히 넓어 proportion 이 시원하고 맑은 느낌이 듭니다.

2. 작품 자체는 wood 으로 정교하게 만들었고 실제식물의 색과 작은 크기에서 벗어나지 않아

소박한 느낌이 드는 겸손한 아름다움을 선사합니다.

3. 주로 벽에 걸려 있는 작품들에 익숙한 관람자에게 이번에는 바닥 (floor) 의 틈새에서나, 벽의 뒷쪽에서,

작품을 발견하는 신선한 즐거움도 줍니다.

( 관람자는 두리번 두리번, 수동적이 아닌 능동적인 태도로 관람하게 되지요. )

Franz Kafka 의 Metamorphosis 는 제가 어릴적 한국에서 한글로 번역된 것을 읽은 적이 있었죠.

사람들과 함께 하기 보다는 혼자있는것이 더욱 좋았던 , 무엇보다 책을 읽는것을 좋아하였기에

그땐 손에 닿는 것은 그것이 무엇이 되었든 ,한자가 섞인 신문이든 , 삼촌들이 대학다닐 때

읽었던 문학지라하더라도 거침없이 읽어버렸던 관계로, 아마도 중 1 ? 아님 훨씬 그 이전에 이 책을 접하였었는데

그 때 읽고 기억에 남는 생각은 이 책에 실린 사건은 현실에서는 절대 일어날 수 없는 일로서

어둡고 무서운 마치 악몽같은 이야기였었다고만 기억남네요. 실제로 커다랗고 시커멓게 생긴 먼지에 뒤덮이고

등에는 사과가 박혀 썩고 있는 그런 모습의 벌레가 방안을 차지하고 있는 visual 한 상상력을 자극 시키던 글이었는데...

헌데 영어로 번역된 것을 아이폰의 stanza app 을 사용 읽게 된 지금,

어릴적엔 이해하지 못하던, 바로 가족의 생계를 책임지는 breadwinner 의 입장에서 이 소설을 이해하게 되었고

얼마나 지독하게 슬픈 이야기인지 알게 되었네요.

아마도 주인공은 이십대이다 싶습니다. 가족의 (아버지의) 비지니스가 망한 이후로 이 젊은 친구가 가족의 생계를 책임지게

되었고 travelling salesman 으로 취직하여 ( 여러곳을 여행하고 방문하며 물건을 파는) 열심히 일하여 꽤 수입을 올리게 되었고

그때문에 가족들은 편안하게 살고 있었습니다.

(아마도 아주 열심히 힘들게 남들보다 고소득을 올리기 위해 고단하게 무리하며 일을 했겠죠? )

그덕에 늙은 아버지는 뚱뚱해지고 어머니는 두 손 놓고 집에서만 있어왔고

열일곱 여동생은 이쁜 옷을 입고 바이올린을 배우고 있었으며 , 주인공은 사랑하는 여동생을 좋은 학교에 다니게 하고

싶다는 꿈에 젖어 있었습니다. ( 물론 자신이 많이 많이 벌어서)

그러니, 온 가족 네 식구 중 홀로 직업을 갖고 나머지 세 식구를 먹여 살리는 어린 가장이었던 것이죠.

여동생이 열일곱이었으니 나이차가 많이 난다 하여도 이십대 중반이었을까요?

그러던 어느 날 ( 아마도 과로로 인하여) 악몽에 시달리던 밤을 보내고 깨어나니 벌레로 변해버린 자신을 만나게 됩니다.

( 정말로 벌레로 변한것이 아닌듯 그냥 은유인듯, 일을 못하는

혐오스런 벌레 처럼 여겨지는 주인공 입장에서 볼 때 아무 쓸모없는 아픈 존재가 되어 버린것이겠죠.

한국어에도 그런 말이 있지않습니까? 식충이라는...그냥 누군가에 기생하는 경제적으로 남에게 의지해야 하는 불쌍한

입장을 가진 사람들을 혹자는 그렇게 까지 비하하기도 하니까요. ) 그리고 그건 그가 원하던 바가 아니었죠.

어느날 갑자기 찾아온 무기력한 상태로의 변신...

그리고 그런 그가 먹지 못해 빈껍데기로 죽음에 이루기까지 그가 그토록 사랑하여 그들의 생계를 책임지고 싶어하였던 부모

어여삐 여겨 좋은 학교에 보내고 싶어 힘들게 일을 하며

모든것을 바친 그의 여동생...그 가족들은 하나씩 냉혹하게 변합니다.

주인공은 벌레로 변했으나, 가족들은 무엇으로

어떤 존재들로

변하였을까요?

( 어려운 단어 별로 없고 읽기 쉬운 단편입니다. )

Love Among the Chickens by P.G. Wodehouse, 1906년도 영국에서 처음 출판

(Stanza app을 이용하여 Iphone 을 사용하여 읽었습니다.)

내용은 밝고 심각하지 않으며 (철학적인 거 별로 없음) 옛 이야기이지만 어느 시대에나 있을 수 있는 일로

마치 즐거운 수다쟁이 이웃이 들려주는 이야기 느낌을 줍니다.

주인공은 작가로 미혼의 남자이며 친구가 운영하는 시골 닭농장으로 초대받아 그곳서 글을 쓰며 지내게 됩니다.

그곳으로 가는 길에 마음에 드는 young lady를 우연히 만나게 되고 그녀의 아버지 마음에 들어 결혼 승락을 받으려고

노력하게되고...

오래전에 쓰여진 책이지만 표현력이 재밌으며 좋다고 느껴지는 문장이 많았고요.

다만 요즘은 자주 볼 수 없는 idiom 과 단어도 나오지요.

Parleying with : to speak with another, to discuss terms with enemy

Duns :

dun: a dun horse, a person who duns, an urgent request, a demand for payment

A gaby : a simpleton
