Allergan is looking to unload its obesity device business, which includes the once-popular Lap-Band--courtesy of Allergan

Now that it's done "exploring strategic options," Allergan ($AGN) is all-in on plans to sell off its obesity-intervention business, expecting to ink a deal by June.
The unit, which includes Allergan's Lab-Band device and Orbera intragastric balloon system, has faced a slump in demand over the past year. In 2012, revenue plummeted 21.5% to $159.5 million amid concerns over Lap-Band's safety and a failed bid to get the device indicated for teens.
So, who wants to buy it? Last month, CEO David Pyott said the company had attracted interest from at least one private equity outfit, but Allergan is about four years removed from Lap-Band's heyday and is unlikely to find a blockbuster deal. As Bloomberg notes, the obesity unit peaked in 2009 with $296 million in annual revenue, but an onslaught of lawsuits and research questioning Lap-Band's effectiveness have whittled away at profits ever since.
In the meantime, Allergan is planning to report its obesity revenues as a discontinued operation from here on out. But the company believes it can keep growing even with Lap-Band in the rearview, projecting obesity-free 2013 revenue of up to $6.2 billion, about 8.9% over 2012. Driving that growth are big sales expectations for the eye drugs Alphagan and Restasis, plus another giant year for Botox, which Allergan projects to bring in up to $2 billion on its own.

Abstract

Background Although laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) is a popular metabolic/bariatric procedure, few prospective studies have assessed its outcomes.

This study aimed to prospectively assess LAGB safety and effectiveness outcomes using the MIDBAND ™ (MID, Dardilly, France).

Methods Between May 2005 and September 2006, 262 morbidly obese patients underwent primary gastric banding with pars flaccida technique in 13 French medical centers.

금일 인터넷에서 우연히 위밴드 선택이라는 글을 보았습니다.

미국 FDA 정품 랩밴드를 광고하며... 본 글은 2012년2월 어느 소설가(?)에 의해 작성되었더군요.

" 현재 국내에서 사용되는 밴드를그림에 따라 비교하면서.. 필링을 반복하며 밴드의 내경이 둥굴게유지되지 않는 것을 강조하면서..."

오류 1 : 미드밴드는 2012년 8월 한국 식약청 허가를 받았습니다. 그럼 2012년 2월에 글쓴이가 밀수하여 시술하였나? 처벌받아야 되겠죠. 전화번호도 있던데.

어떻게 수입허가도 받지않고 사용도 안되는 밴드를 갖고 험담을 할까요?

오류 2 : 미드밴드는 메뉴얼에 분명히 설명을 담고 있습니다. Maximum 필링은 7cc라고.

미드밴드는 필링을 하지않고도 체중 감소가 가능한 밴드입니다. 그러나, 수술 후 일정 기간이 지나면(4 -8주후)환자의 상태를 보고 의사의 판단에 따라 필링을 하는것입니다. 즉, 7cc 이상 하는것은 특이한 경우이겠지요. 그러므로, 14cc까지 주입하여 형태가 변하는 것은 일어나지도 않는 경우를 가정한 것입니다. 글쓴이가 의사는 아니라고 느껴지는 부분입니다.

3. 오류 3 : 미드밴드는 위벽을 꿰매지 않아도 부작용이 타 밴드보다 현처히 낮다는 보고서가 많이 있습니다.

즉, 밴드 채우고 필링 왕창하고 또 미끌어질까 두려워 위와 위를 꼬매고 있으니 수술시간은 얼마나 많이 걸리겠습니까???

꼬매고 빡필해서 위미란(밴드가 위를 파고 드는 현상)이 발생하면 또 재수술하느라고 정신없고 이건 도대체 무슨 짓인지. 환자를 두번 세번 죽이는 일이지요. 꼬매는 것은 밴드가 흘러내려서 하는 것이랍니다. 미드밴드는 전혀 이러한 수술을 하지않아도 미끄러짐 현상이 2-3%에 불과합니다.

그러므로, 미드밴드는 수술시간이 20분 내외인 반면에 타밴드는 40분에서 1시간 정도 걸리는 것입니다.

여러분, 위밴드 선택? 정말 잘 알고 하시기 바랍니다. 타 밴드 험담하는 꼴은 이제 그만하시길 바랍니다.

MID Band is a new innovative gastric band produced by the French company “MID”. MID Band has been used for the past 12 years all over the world, with excellent results.

It is the 2^nd most used band in Europe and is sold in over 50 countries worldwide. The reported weight loss results are in excess of 60% while complication rates (slippage & erosion) are only 2-3%. These results are better than with any other gastric band in the world.

MID Band’s soft and broad design makes it accommodate very easily and naturally to the anatomy of the stomach.

It is rapidly gaining popularity with a number of UK, French and Mexican surgeons.

Several thousands have been placed and the results appear to be promising-especially within the area of complications.

Whilst the experiences of other banded patients is important, it is essential that your choice of band should be made in consultation with your surgeon and following your own research of the available literature. The bands all have advantages and disadvantages. It is important that you find the best one for you.
Prior to leaving your home for surgery, it is essential that you make provision for safe and effective follow up care upon your return. This will reduce the risk of potential complications such as port damage, tube puncture and infection. A trained and experienced adjuster will be able to advise regarding the correct volume for you. Do not delegate this task to a nurse or doctor with no experience of band adjustment-it could be a very costly mistake and could increase the risk of serious complications such as erosion and slippage.

The Midband: This band is shorter than Lap band and Swedish Band, which makes it resistant to erosion and reduces the irritation to the gastric wall lining. The Midband can be easily detected with the help of X-rays, which makes the adjustment process easier. Just like the other bands mentioned above, this band can be tightened or loosened to control the quantity of grub the patient consumes.

미드밴드는 굉장히 부드럽고 구부리기가 쉬워서 부착이 아주 용이하면서도 늘어나지 않으며, 타 밴드에 비해서 유일하게 밴드 이중 잠금장치가 되어있어서 신체적인 조건을 훨씬 능가하는 탄력성있으며 필링시 조이는 능력이 탁월합니다.

미드밴드는 날카로운 모서리가 없으면서 표면이 매끄러워 심지어 마찰이 생기더라도 위벽을 손상하지않는 장점이 있습니다. 또한, 엑스레이 불투과성 실리콘 재질이기 때문에 정확한 위치에 부착과 조절이 아주 쉽다.

The MIDBAND was designed with the advice and guidance of Dr. Vincent Frering after his extensive experience with other bands, such as the American Lapband (Inamed)and the Swedish Band (previously Obtech and now Johnson & Johnson).

The MIDBAND is an adjustable peri-gastric belt, implantable by laparoscopy. It is indicated for surgical treatment of morbid obesity defined by an index of mass in excess of 40 kg/m2 (or 35 kg/m2 with co-morbidities).

The MIDBAND provides a very attractive alternative to conventional surgical methods which are more invasive and irreversible, requiring extended hospitalization.

The MIDBAND is extremely flexible making it easy to fit. It is inextensible, and the unique double closure system ensures a fastening capacity far in excess of the physiological conditions required.

The MIDBAND has no sharp edges or irregularities thereby preserving the gastric wall intact, even in event of rubbing. It is opaque to X rays, making it easy to locate and adjust.
