책 소개 - 그건 사랑이없네 (한비야 지음)

얼마전 "황금어장 무릎팍 도사"에 출연...

그 때 했던 얘기들이 이 책의 많은 내용이기도 하다.

수다스럽지만 그녀의 수다는 밉지가 않다.

산을 좋아하여 북한산을 자주 오른다는 작가를 언젠가는 한 번 우연히 지나치지는 않을까?

천주교 신자이면서도(나도 살짝 천주교... ㅋㅋ) 결코 그 어떤 다른 종교에 대해서

배타적이지 않음은 그녀의 열려있는 마음을 보여주는 진실한 신앙인의 모습이 아닐까 생각한다.

왜 우리나라에도 도와줄 사람이 많은데 굳이 외국에 있는 사람들까지 신경을 써야하냐고

묻는다면... 그 답은 이 책을 사서 읽어보면 얻을 수 있을것이라 본다.

좋은 책이다.

가장 작은 총을 구입하려고 한참 고심하던 중...

NAA Guardian을 겨우 찾게 되던 그 날... (참고로 인기가 많은 총들은 돈이 있어도 사기 힘듬)

마침 Magnum ME380 Micro Desert Eagle도 함께 가게에 있었다.

둘 다 값도 비슷하고, 화력도 차이 없고... 하지만 이 놈은 뭔가 투박한게 별로 끌리지 않았다.

어차피 두 총다 Point & Shoot(Fire)이긴 하지만, 그래도 보기에 좋은게 왠지 느낌도 좋아서

결국은 NAA Guardian을 구입하게 되었다.

문제는... 이런 작은 총은 방아쇠 당길때 총이 심하게 흔들린다는것...

손에 느껴지는 맛도 별로고... 그냥 back-up으로 가져다닐뿐....

Financial Decisions to Make as You Divorce

Divorce may be one of the most damaging financial events in the lives of those who go through it, but that isn’t always immediately clear to a couple about to split up.

In fact, the first response is probably emotional — whether exhaustion and sadness at having failed to save the relationship after years of struggle or shock when your spouse walks out. Watchdog to fine soju makers 200 billion won

Korea's antitrust (독점 금지의) watchdog said Wednesday it will fine 11 local liquor manufacturers more than 200 billion won ($173.3 million) for rigging (부정 수단으로 조작하다) product prices.

DNA Bank: Appropriate?

Even with strong police enforcement and harsh penalties for crimes, the crime rate has not been showing a decline in the nation. Thus, the government has been working to strengthen the genetic profiling of criminals. Although the reasons are clear, public outrage (격분, 분개) is occurring due to concerns over privacy. Then again, there is the larger proponent side saying that genetic profiling is pivotal (중추의) in locking down possibly dangerous suspects.

A recent data revealed from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) showed that approximately 64 percent of Korean adults believed that a national DNA database must be established to combat serious crimes.

Obviously holding a DNA bank isn’t just for the sole use of enabling a criminal DNA database. It can be used to support medical research. Medical records and the genetic information of patients can be collected and managed. The idea is heavily supported by the Ministry of Justice. However, the ethical issue surrounding human rights implications does bring various discussions to the table.

Many legal experts and civil groups are voicing their opinions on the idea of a DNA bank. They are more than convinced that such samples from suspects violate their legal right to be innocent until proven guilty.

Salad

4 sesame pita breads

2 cans (15 ounces) chickpeas, rinsed and drained

1 cucumber, diced

4 large beefsteak tomatoes

6 scallions, chopped

1/2 cup pitted black olives, preferably kalamata olives

Dressing

1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil

1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

2 teaspoons olive tapenade

1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint

Pepper

Garnish

Sprigs of fresh mint

What to Do

1. Preheat the oven broiler. Split the pita breads in half by carefully cutting them open with a sharp knife. Place them on a baking sheet. Toast under the broiler until golden brown and crisp, turning once, and then allow to cool. Tear into bite-size pieces.

2. Put the chickpeas, cucumber, tomatoes, scallions, and olives in a serving bowl. For the dressing, whisk together the olive oil, vinegar, tapenade, mint, and pepper to taste. Drizzle over the vegetables and toss together.

3. Just before serving, add the pieces of pita bread and mix well. Serve garnished with (~으로 장식하다, 꾸미다) sprigs of fresh mint.

No Einstein in Your Crib? Get a Refund

Parent alert: the Walt Disney Company is now offering refunds for all those “Baby Einstein” videos that did not make children into geniuses. They may have been a great electronic baby sitter, but the unusual refunds appear to be a tacit (암묵의, 무언의) admission that they did not increase infant intellect.

“We see it as an acknowledgment by the leading baby video company that baby videos are not educational, and we hope other baby media companies will follow suit by offering refunds,” said Susan Linn, director of Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood.

Baby Einstein, founded in 1997, was one of the earliest players in what became a huge electronic media market for babies and toddlers. Acquired by Disney in 2001, the company expanded to a full line of books, toys, flashcards and apparel, along with DVDs including “Baby Mozart,” “Baby Shakespeare” and “Baby Galileo.” According to a 2003 study, a third of all American babies from 6 months to 2 years old had at least one “Baby Einstein” video.

Despite their ubiquity (도처에 있음), and the fact that many babies are transfixed (~에 꼼짝할 수가 없다) by the videos, the American Academy of Pediatrics (소아과) recommends no screen time at all for children under 2.

The Change in Pedestrian Traffic

It may be hard to believe, but the common knowledge of walking to the left-side on pedestrian (보행자) walkways was an idea embedded (깊숙이 박다) in our society during the Japanese colonial years. We need to turn the clock to 1921. The Japanese obviously controlled everything in Korea, and traffic was not an exception.

They changed it to left from right. If you have been in Japan, you may have noticed how the driver’s side of a car is on the right. In any case, this rather odd traffic rule was ignored when the colonial rule ended.

Interestingly enough, however, the rule for pedestrians remained. The nation’s government finally announced that it will call an end to the Japanese influence which remained for nearly 90 years. As of October 1st, the Ministry of Land, Transportation, and Maritime Affairs started tests to have pedestrians walk on the right-side. The new rule is likely to cause much confusion amongst citizens. However, it’s wonderful to know we are erasing a habit from a different culture.

Buffett’s Bet on Trains

Warren Buffett is betting big on railroads. He started buying Burlington Northern Santa Fe in 2006 and then made investments in Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern. On Tuesday, his company, Berkshire Hathaway, announced the purchase of the 77 percent of Burlington Northern it didn’t already own for about $44 billion (along with the assumption of $10 billion in debt). It is Berkshire’s largest acquisition.

It has been a long time since railroads were central to America’s booms, bubbles and busts. What does Mr. Buffett’s investment in trains say about prospects for the economy? How can his role be put in historical perspective?

The new chairman of New York’s transit system is looking to introduce a pricing policy that would offer passengers discounts to ride late at night and on weekends, an abrupt (갑작스러운) break from a century-old fare model that could be the city’s biggest transportation revolution since the demise (소멸, 종말) of the token.

The goal would be to encourage use of buses and subways during traditionally quieter hours. Offer Raises Idea of Marriage for Catholic Priests

In making it easier for traditionalist Anglicans (성공회의) to become Catholic, Pope Benedict XVI once again revealed the character of his papacy (교황의 직, 교황 제도): to reach out to the most fervent (열렬한) of like-minded believers, even if they are not Catholic. Yet some observers wonder whether his move could paradoxically (역설적으로) liberalize (자유로워지다) the church — or at least wedge it open — on a crucial issue: celibacy (독신(주의), 금욕).

In a momentous (중요한) move on Tuesday, the Vatican said it would help Anglicans uncomfortable with female priests and openly gay bishops join a new Anglican rite (의식) within the Catholic Church.

The invitation also extends to married Anglican clergy. And so some have begun to wonder, even if the 82-year-old Benedict himself would never allow it, would more people in the Roman Catholic Church begin to entertain the possibility of married Catholic priests?

Married priests are permitted in the eastern Catholic rites, and one of Benedict’s central goals is full communion (종교 단체, 종파) with the Orthodox (정통파의) — and they, too, allow priests to marry. Anglican priests, married or not, are already permitted to become Catholic priests, but on a case-by-case basis. The new dispensation (시행, 실시) would for the first time allow in groups of married priests.

You Will Need

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

1/4 teaspoon salt

3 large eggs

1/3 cup packed light-brown sugar

1 1/4 cups milk

1 1/4 cups fresh or canned solid-pack pumpkin puree

3 tablespoons vegetable oil

What to Do

1. Preheat oven to 200°F.

2. In medium bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, pie spice, and salt. In large bowl, stir together eggs and sugar. Stir in milk, pumpkin, and oil. Add flour mixture and stir just until smooth.

3. Heat griddle or large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Lightly coat with nonstick cooking spray. Working in batches, drop batter, a cup at a time, onto hot griddle (과자 등을 굽는 번철). Cook pancakes until bubbles form on top and bottoms are golden brown, about 2 1/2 minutes. Turn pancakes over. Cook until bottoms are golden brown, about 2 minutes. Place on baking sheet in oven to keep warm. Make remaining pancakes, coating griddle with cooking spray as needed.

4. Top with dried cranberries or raisins softened in a pot of warm maple syrup, and a sprinkling of toasted walnuts.

U.S. Can’t Trace Foreign Visitors on Expired Visas

Eight years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and despite repeated mandates (명령, 지령) from Congress, the United States still has no reliable system for verifying that foreign visitors have left the country. New concern was focused on that security loophole last week, when Hosam Maher Husein Smadi, a 19-year-old Jordanian who had overstayed (~보다 오래 머무르다) his tourist visa, was accused in court of plotting to blow up a Dallas skyscraper.

Last year alone, 2.9 million foreign visitors on temporary visas like Mr. Smadi’s checked in to the country but never officially checked out, immigration officials said. While officials say they have no way to confirm it, they suspect that several hundred thousand of them overstayed their visas. Over all, the officials said, about 40 percent of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States came on legal visas and overstayed.

Mr. Smadi’s case has brought renewed calls from both parties in Congress for Department of Homeland Security officials to complete a universal electronic exit monitoring system. Representative Lamar Smith of Texas said the Smadi case “points to a real need for an entry and exit system if we are serious about reducing illegal immigration.”

Since the Sept. 11 attacks, immigration authorities, with more than $1 billion from Congress, have greatly improved and expanded their systems to monitor foreigners when they arrive. But despite several Congressional authorizations, there are no biometric inspections or a systematic follow-up to confirm that foreign visitors have departed.

The Right to Knowing One’s Parentage

The recent hit film “National Athlete” brought many questions to the viewers. Do you believe an adoptee (양자) should have the fundamental human right to know his or her biological parents? Interestingly enough, the law states that the right to know parentage (태생, 가문) is not a fundamental human right in the same way as the right to life and liberty.

On the flip side of the coin, some argue that by choosing to have children, parents voluntarily accept a set of duties. The act of denying a child the right to know their biological parents is an act of irresponsibility. Currently in Korea, we don’t have a government operated infrastructure for discovering parentage.

Should adoptees have the right to know? Should this be a fundamental part of human rights?

Group Resists Korean Stigma for Unwed Mothers

Four years ago, when she found that she was pregnant by her former boyfriend, Choi Hyong-sook considered abortion. But after she saw the little blip (레이더 스크린에 나타나는 현상) of her baby’s heartbeat on ultrasound images, she could not go through with it.

As her pregnancy advanced, she confided in (비밀을 털어놓다) her elder brother. His reaction would sound familiar to unwed mothers in South Korea. She said he tried to drag her to an abortion clinic. Later, she said, he pressed her to give the child up for adoption.

Now, Ms. Choi and other women in her situation are trying to set up the country’s first unwed mothers association to defend their right to raise their own children. The fledgling (애송이, 풋내기) group of women is striking at one of the great ironies of South Korea. Lee orders measures to isolate child sex offenders

President Lee Myung-bak on Monday instructed the government to take measures to separate child sex offenders from the rest of society by heightening public disclosure (폭로, 발표) of their identities. Presiding over a meeting of his senior secretaries, Lee said that the people have the right to know if their children are exposed to the danger of a sexual assault in their own neighborhood, as sex offenders have a very high rate of recidivism (상습 범행).

The call follows a public outcry (절규, 항의) over the Supreme Court's ruling handing down a 12-year jail term for a man convicted of raping an eight-year-old girl, who lost her genitals, anus and part of her intestines in the attack. The parliament has already begun discussion on toughening punishments for perpetrators (가해자, 범인) of rape and other brutal crimes by revising the current criminal law, which limits the length of imprisonment to 15 years.

Leaner Times at Harvard: No Cookies

Gone are the hot breakfasts in most dorms and the pastries at Widener Library. Varsity (대학 대표팀) athletes are no longer guaranteed free sweat suits, and just this week came the jarring (귀에 거슬리는) news that professors will go without cookies at faculty meetings. By Harvard standards, these are hard times. With the value of its endowment (기증, 기부) down by almost 30 percent, the world’s richest university is learning to live with less.

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Harvard’s largest division, has cut about $75 million from its budget in recent months and is planning more.
