No Einstein in Your Crib? Get a Refund

Parent alert: the Walt Disney Company is now offering refunds for all those “Baby Einstein” videos that did not make children into geniuses. They may have been a great electronic baby sitter, but the unusual refunds appear to be a tacit (암묵의, 무언의) admission that they did not increase infant intellect.

“We see it as an acknowledgment by the leading baby video company that baby videos are not educational, and we hope other baby media companies will follow suit by offering refunds,” said Susan Linn, director of Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood.

Baby Einstein, founded in 1997, was one of the earliest players in what became a huge electronic media market for babies and toddlers. Acquired by Disney in 2001, the company expanded to a full line of books, toys, flashcards and apparel, along with DVDs including “Baby Mozart,” “Baby Shakespeare” and “Baby Galileo.” According to a 2003 study, a third of all American babies from 6 months to 2 years old had at least one “Baby Einstein” video.

Despite their ubiquity (도처에 있음), and the fact that many babies are transfixed (~에 꼼짝할 수가 없다) by the videos, the American Academy of Pediatrics (소아과) recommends no screen time at all for children under 2.

The Change in Pedestrian Traffic

It may be hard to believe, but the common knowledge of walking to the left-side on pedestrian (보행자) walkways was an idea embedded (깊숙이 박다) in our society during the Japanese colonial years. We need to turn the clock to 1921. The Japanese obviously controlled everything in Korea, and traffic was not an exception.

They changed it to left from right. If you have been in Japan, you may have noticed how the driver’s side of a car is on the right. In any case, this rather odd traffic rule was ignored when the colonial rule ended.

Interestingly enough, however, the rule for pedestrians remained. The nation’s government finally announced that it will call an end to the Japanese influence which remained for nearly 90 years. As of October 1st, the Ministry of Land, Transportation, and Maritime Affairs started tests to have pedestrians walk on the right-side. The new rule is likely to cause much confusion amongst citizens. However, it’s wonderful to know we are erasing a habit from a different culture.

Buffett’s Bet on Trains

Warren Buffett is betting big on railroads. He started buying Burlington Northern Santa Fe in 2006 and then made investments in Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern. On Tuesday, his company, Berkshire Hathaway, announced the purchase of the 77 percent of Burlington Northern it didn’t already own for about $44 billion (along with the assumption of $10 billion in debt). It is Berkshire’s largest acquisition.

It has been a long time since railroads were central to America’s booms, bubbles and busts. What does Mr. Buffett’s investment in trains say about prospects for the economy? How can his role be put in historical perspective?

Offer Raises Idea of Marriage for Catholic Priests

In making it easier for traditionalist Anglicans (성공회의) to become Catholic, Pope Benedict XVI once again revealed the character of his papacy (교황의 직, 교황 제도): to reach out to the most fervent (열렬한) of like-minded believers, even if they are not Catholic. Yet some observers wonder whether his move could paradoxically (역설적으로) liberalize (자유로워지다) the church — or at least wedge it open — on a crucial issue: celibacy (독신(주의), 금욕).

In a momentous (중요한) move on Tuesday, the Vatican said it would help Anglicans uncomfortable with female priests and openly gay bishops join a new Anglican rite (의식) within the Catholic Church.

The invitation also extends to married Anglican clergy. And so some have begun to wonder, even if the 82-year-old Benedict himself would never allow it, would more people in the Roman Catholic Church begin to entertain the possibility of married Catholic priests?

Pumpkin Griddle Cakes

You Will Need

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

1/4 teaspoon salt

3 large eggs

1/3 cup packed light-brown sugar

1 1/4 cups milk

1 1/4 cups fresh or canned solid-pack pumpkin puree

3 tablespoons vegetable oil

What to Do

1. Preheat oven to 200°F.

2. In medium bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, pie spice, and salt. In large bowl, stir together eggs and sugar. Stir in milk, pumpkin, and oil. Add flour mixture and stir just until smooth.

3. Heat griddle or large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Lightly coat with nonstick cooking spray. Working in batches, drop batter, a cup at a time, onto hot griddle (과자 등을 굽는 번철). Cook pancakes until bubbles form on top and bottoms are golden brown, about 2 1/2 minutes. Turn pancakes over. Cook until bottoms are golden brown, about 2 minutes. Place on baking sheet in oven to keep warm. Make remaining pancakes, coating griddle with cooking spray as needed.

4. Top with dried cranberries or raisins softened in a pot of warm maple syrup, and a sprinkling of toasted walnuts.

Obama Pledges Again to End ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’

U.S. Can’t Trace Foreign Visitors on Expired Visas

Eight years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and despite repeated mandates (명령, 지령) from Congress, the United States still has no reliable system for verifying that foreign visitors have left the country. New concern was focused on that security loophole last week, when Hosam Maher Husein Smadi, a 19-year-old Jordanian who had overstayed (~보다 오래 머무르다) his tourist visa, was accused in court of plotting to blow up a Dallas skyscraper.

Last year alone, 2.9 million foreign visitors on temporary visas like Mr. Smadi’s checked in to the country but never officially checked out, immigration officials said. While officials say they have no way to confirm it, they suspect that several hundred thousand of them overstayed their visas. Over all, the officials said, about 40 percent of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States came on legal visas and overstayed.

Mr. Smadi’s case has brought renewed calls from both parties in Congress for Department of Homeland Security officials to complete a universal electronic exit monitoring system. Representative Lamar Smith of Texas said the Smadi case “points to a real need for an entry and exit system if we are serious about reducing illegal immigration.”

Since the Sept. 11 attacks, immigration authorities, with more than $1 billion from Congress, have greatly improved and expanded their systems to monitor foreigners when they arrive. But despite several Congressional authorizations, there are no biometric inspections or a systematic follow-up to confirm that foreign visitors have departed.

The Right to Knowing One’s Parentage

The recent hit film “National Athlete” brought many questions to the viewers. Do you believe an adoptee (양자) should have the fundamental human right to know his or her biological parents? Interestingly enough, the law states that the right to know parentage (태생, 가문) is not a fundamental human right in the same way as the right to life and liberty.

On the flip side of the coin, some argue that by choosing to have children, parents voluntarily accept a set of duties. The act of denying a child the right to know their biological parents is an act of irresponsibility. Currently in Korea, we don’t have a government operated infrastructure for discovering parentage.

Should adoptees have the right to know? Should this be a fundamental part of human rights?

어느덧 15년이 지났다. 이미 고전이 되었는지는 모르겠지만, 교수님의 어렵지 않은...

하지만 그 어떤 말씀 하나도 틀리지 않는 삶에 대한 철학을 정리하신 최고의 책으로

아직도 기억하고 있다.

Four years ago, when she found that she was pregnant by her former boyfriend, Choi Hyong-sook considered abortion. But after she saw the little blip (레이더 스크린에 나타나는 현상) of her baby’s heartbeat on ultrasound images, she could not go through with it.

As her pregnancy advanced, she confided in (비밀을 털어놓다) her elder brother. His reaction would sound familiar to unwed mothers in South Korea. She said he tried to drag her to an abortion clinic. Later, she said, he pressed her to give the child up for adoption.

Lee orders measures to isolate child sex offenders

President Lee Myung-bak on Monday instructed the government to take measures to separate child sex offenders from the rest of society by heightening public disclosure (폭로, 발표) of their identities. Presiding over a meeting of his senior secretaries, Lee said that the people have the right to know if their children are exposed to the danger of a sexual assault in their own neighborhood, as sex offenders have a very high rate of recidivism (상습 범행).

The call follows a public outcry (절규, 항의) over the Supreme Court's ruling handing down a 12-year jail term for a man convicted of raping an eight-year-old girl, who lost her genitals, anus and part of her intestines in the attack.
