Brief Description

The cultural landscape of the Hortobágy Puszta consists of a vast area of plains and wetlands in eastern Hungary. Traditional forms of land use, such as the grazing of domestic animals, have been present in this pastoral society for more than two millennia.

Justification for Inscription

Criterion (iv): The Hungarian Puszta is an outstanding example of a cultural landscape shaped by a pastoral human society.

Criterion (v): The landscape of the Hortobágy National Park preserves intact and visible the evidence of its traditional use over more than two millennia and represents the harmonious interaction between human beings and nature.

중부 유럽에 있는 헝가리의 정식명칭은 헝가리공화국이다. 면적 9만 3033㎢. 인구 1,004만 5000명(2003). 동쪽으로 우크라이나와 루마니아, 서쪽으로 오스트리아·슬로베니아, 남쪽으로 크로아티아와 유고슬라비아, 북쪽으로는 슬로바키아에 둘러싸인 내륙국가이다. 수도는 부다페스트.

신생대 제3기에 형성된 알프스·카르파티아·트란실바니아알프스 및 디나르알프스 등 여러 산맥에 둘러싸인 대규모 구조분지의 주요부분을 차지한다. 국토의 약 60%는 해발고도 200m 이하의 낮은 평야로 다뉴브강이 거의 중앙부를 북쪽에서 남쪽으로 가로지른다.

헝가리 국토 대부분은 대륙성기후에 속하지만 남서부 산지는 어느 정도 해양성기후의 영향을 받는다. 부다페스트의 연평균기온은 11.3℃, 연강수량 615.1㎜이다.

국토는 지형적 특색에 따라 다음과 같이 4개군으로 나뉜다.

척량산지(脊梁山地), 소평원과 대평원, 트란스다뉴비아대지, 메체크산지

호르토바기 국립공원(Hortobagy National Park)은 이들 중 소평원과 대평원에 속하는 곳이다.

소평원은 알프스산맥·카르파티아산맥 및 척량산지로 둘러싸인 구조분지로서 다뉴브강 서안부를 차지하며 알프스에서 발원하는 라바강·라브카강 등이 이 지역을 동쪽으로 흐르며 다뉴브강 북쪽은 슬로바키아령이다.

대평원의 대부분은 낮고 편평한 티소강 유역에 걸치며 광대한 평원을 형성한다. 외견상으로는 토양의 질이 고른 단순한 평탄지처럼 보이지만 오랜 지질시대를 통하여 티소강과 그 지류인 쾨뢰시강은 이따금 범람하여 유로를 바꾸었기 때문에 자연제방 자리에는 사질토의 낮은 언덕을 형성하고 하천이 흐르던 자리에는 저습지 등이 복잡한 토양층을 형성하였다. 또한 바람의 작용에 의한 비사지(飛砂地)나 사구지 등이 평탄한 데 비하여 토양·수문조건이 비교적 복잡하게 되어 있다. 북부의 니르세그는 황토 및 사질토양이 풍부하여 양질의 감자·옥수수·담배 등을 생산한다. 중부의 다뉴브강과 티소강 사이의 지역은 북서에서 남동으로 이어진 사구열의 발달로 배수가 잘 되는 사질토양지대이므로 케치케메트를 중심으로 포도·살구·딸기·파프리카 등의 과수재배와 원예농업이 활발하다.

티소강 동부의 쾨뢰시강 하류역은 지하수위는 비교적 높지만 강수량에 비해 증발량이 많아 염분이 집적되기 쉬워 알칼리성 토양인 곳이 많다. 이 때문에 경지의 개발이 제한되어 자연발생한 초원은 예로부터 방목장으로 이용되어 목축업이 발달하였다. 이러한 스텝 모양의 초원을 푸스타(puszta)라고 하는데, 제2차세계대전 후 티소강 상류역에서의 댐 건설에 의한 발전과 관계용수의 확보, 하류역에서의 배수시설 건설로 푸스타는 차츰 경지로 변하고 있다. 제2차세계대전 후 제1차 5개년계획에 따라 포도산지로 유명한 토카이 남쪽 티소강에 티사루크댐과 관개용수로가 건설되었다.

호르토바기 국립공원은 유럽 최대의 초원지대로 헝가리 동쪽 보르쇼드오보우이젬플렌(Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén)주, 헤베시(Heves)주, 호이드비흐르(Hajdú-Bihar)주 그리고 야사나기쿤솔노크(Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok)주에 걸쳐있는 광대한 대평원 지대이다. 티사(Tisza)강 유역을 중심으로 서쪽은 도나우강, 남동쪽은 루마니아에 까지 펼쳐져 있는 헝가리대평원 중의 일부이다.

호르토바기 국립공원이 있는 티사(Tisza)강 유역 중 동쪽 쾨뢰시강 하류의 지하수위는 비교적 높지만 강수량에 비해 증발량이 많아 염분이 집적되기 쉬운 지역이다. 따라서 토양이 소금을 포함하는 알칼리성인 곳이 많은데, 이 중 암염층을 이루는 곳을 솔로네츠(solonetz)라 하며 농경이 불가능한 곳이다.

이처럼 경작지 개발이 제한되어 자연적으로 짧은 잔디로 덮여있는 초원이 생겨나게 되었다. 그래서 이 일대는 예로부터 방목장으로 이용되어 목축업이 발달하였다. 이러한 스텝 모양의 초원을 푸스타(puszta)라고 한다. 거의 수목이 없는 초원으로, 강수량은 500mm 내외이나, 비옥한 흑토와 황토질 토양으로 구성되었다. 건조하기 때문에 지층에 염류 등이 침적되고, 알칼리성 토양으로 변화하여 큰 나무는 자라지 못하는 곳이다.

푸스타(Puszta)를 헝가리대평원, 즉 헝가리 초원을 지칭하기도 한다. 푸스타는 원래 초원지대에 거주하는 농민의 집을 뜻하는 말이었는데, 의미가 바뀌어 헝가리 초원을 뜻하는 말로 쓰이게 되었다. 이와함께 사람이 살지 않는 지역이라는 뜻도 가지게 되었다.

거의 수목이 없는 초원으로, 강수량은 500mm 내외이나, 비옥한 흑토와 황토질 토양으로 구성되었다. 건조하기 때문에 지층에 염류 등이 침적되고, 알칼리성 토양으로 변화하여 큰 나무는 자라지 못한다.

그러나 이곳은 신석기시대부터 사람들이 다양한 방식으로 살아왔음이 확인된 곳이었다. 주로 가축을 기르며 살아왔던 것으로 추정하고 있다. 1세기 경 티스차(Tisza)강 동쪽 스텝지역에서 살고 있던 자직(Jazig)인들이 이곳으로 들어온 것으로 보이는데, 그들은 주로 목축업에 종사한 것 같다.

10~13세기경에는 타타르족과 투르크족의 지배를 받게 되었는데 푸스타(Puszta)라는 지명은 이를 전후하여 사용되기 시작한 것 같다. 당시에는 사람이 살지 않는 지역이라는 뜻이었지만 정착하여 살지는 않지만 가축(주로 회색긴뿔소, nonius말, racka양)들의 목축지로의 활용은 계속하고 있었던듯하다.

제2차 세계대전 후 티사(Tisza)강 상류에서의 댐 건설에 의한 발전과 관계용수의 확보, 하류에서의 배수시설 건설로 푸스타는 차츰 경지로 변하고 있다. 제2차 세계대전 후 제1차 5개년계획에 따라 포도산지로 유명한 토카이 남쪽 티사강에 티사루크댐과 관개용수로가 건설되었다.

여러 개의 산, 강과 호수, 광대한 들판과 습지로 이루어져 있는 이곳에는 수천년간 지속되어온 전통적인 경작 흔적이 남겨져 있다. 따라서 20세기 농업 혁명 이전의 생생한 시골풍경을 잘 보여주는데, 특히 17~18세기에 발전하였던 마을로 전통적 인간 거주의 상태를 잘 보존하고 있다.

73년 이 지역 8만2천헥타르가 헝거리 최초의 국립공원으로 지정되었다. 이 국립공원은 유럽에서도 새를 관찰하기 아주 좋은 곳이다. 과거 20여년 동안 310종 이상의 새가 이곳에 서식하는 것으로 관찰되었다. 유럽에서 야생마가 살아가는 유일한 지역이기도 하다. 굽은 뿔을 가진 산양도 있고 회색소도 있다. 이곳에 둥지를 틀고 사는 동물들도 150여종에 이른다.

유네스코에서는 이 호르토바기 국립공원(Hortobágy National Park - the Puszta)이 "수천년간 지속되어온 전통적인 경작형태의 흔적들이 잘 남겨진 유적"이라는 이유로 1999년 세계문화유산으로 지정하였다. 또 유네스코의 MAB(인간과 생물권 계획)에 따라 지정된 보호구역인 생물권 보전지역(Biosphere Reverve)이 된 곳이기도 하다. 그리고 습지의 보호와 지속가능한 이용에 관한 국제 조약인 람사르 협약(Ramsar Convention), 즉‘물새 서식지로서 특히 국제적으로 중요한 습지에 관한 협약(the convention on wetlands of international importance especially as waterfowl habitat)’에 가입된 곳이기도 하다.

대평원을 무대로 해마다 승마의 날(7월 초). 바자르축제(8월 중순), 창작예술제, 다리축제 등이 열린다.

Hortobágy National Park - the Puszta (1999)

Getting there: from Budapest take the M3 motorway to Füzesabony, then go towards Debrecen on route 33, which crosses the National Park.

Hortobágy is the largest continuous natural grassland in Europe, which means that it was not formed as a result of deforestation or river control. The first Hungarian national park (established in 1973), it is the country's largest protected area (82 thousand hectares). A significant part of it is Biosphere Reserve and a quarter of its area enjoys international protection under the Ramsar Convention on the conservation of wetlands.

Hortobágy has outstanding natural features, maintaining great biological diversity in respect of species and habitats. It is a unique example of the harmonious coexistence of people and nature based on the considerate use of the land. In order to discover the treasures of this region, however, it isn't enough just to travel through it; at first sight there is nothing to see. If you look around, what is most conspicuous is that your eyes are not arrested by any buildings, hills or mountains. But there are times when you may think you see such things: A mirage can be a spectacular sight on hot summer days!

A major part of the area of the National Park is formed by natural habitats, alkaline grasslands, meadows and the marshes lying between them. From the point of view of nature conservation, the artificial wetlands, which cover a much smaller area, are of considerable importance: these are the fishponds, situated on 6 thousand hectares, created during the last century on the worst quality grazing-lands and marshes. Lake Tisza, a reservoir established in the 70s, shows what the water-world looked like before the river was controlled. In its three bays there is enough room for the waterfowl, anglers and even those holiday makers who like noisy water sports.

The marshes and fishponds are bird nesting habitats and migration sites of European significance. The appearance of 342 bird species has been registered in Hortobágy so far, of which 152 species nest in the National Park. The symbol of the Park is the crane; undoubtedly, one of the most spectacular sights here is the cranes' autumn migration. Tens of thousands of cranes can be seen every October as they fly above the grasslands to their overnight roosting places.

Hortobágy was never densely populated, and its few villages were destroyed during the Tartar and Turkish invasions. The monotony of the grasslands is punctuated by the burial mounds and guard mounds of the Nomad peoples that lived here thousands of years ago.

For thousands of years the wild animals grazing on the grasslands of Hortobágy, the aurochs and wild horses, were gradually replaced by domesticated animals. A large number of tough, undemanding long-haired sheep and grey cattle can be found here. Less ancient species are the curly-bristled mangalica pig, a source of good bacon, and the Nonius horse. The predecessor of the latter was brought to Hortobágy from Normandy at the beginning of the 19th century. Visitors are amazed at the skills of the horsemen and at the sight of the galloping herds of horses.

The herdsmen living on the grasslands do not have permanent buildings for themselves or their animals. Most of the ancient herdsmen's buildings are very simple but also practical, made chiefly of reeds. The sweep-pole wells for watering the animals have become symbols of the Hungarian grasslands.

Inns were built 10-12 km apart along the commercial roads crossing the plains, where travellers could rest and the herdsmen turn in for the night. Tourists still like to visit these inns where they can taste the excellent herdsmen's dishes and other specialities of the cuisine of the Great Plain. In the Hortobágy village tourist centre, in the former cart stall of the Nagycsárda (Great Inn), there is today a Herdsmen's Museum where the history and memorabilia of the herding life are shown. A stone bridge was built across the river Hortobágy on the road connecting Budapest with Debrecen in 1827, and from the number of its arches it is known colloquially as Kilenclyukú híd, which means "bridge with nine holes".

Help in getting to know the protected flora and fauna of the National Park is given by four exhibit areas and study trails. It is worth getting information on the areas open to visitors at the tourism information offices or the headquarters of the Park before setting out on your journey.

Of the regular programs, the best known are the International Horse Days and the Hídi Fair in August.

Recommended Excursions:

In the early 1600s István Bocskay, Prince of Transylvania, gave lands east of Hortobágy to those soldiers, the hajdú, who played a prominent part in the battles for independence against the Habsburgs. This is why the area is called the Hajdúság and why the names of many settlements begin with the word hajdú.

The best known of them is Hajdúszoboszló, where people who suffer from locomotor disabilities come from far and wide to take the waters at the spa. In addition to the health spa services, the spa caters to ordinary tourists and to children and young people; for them the Aquapark is the ideal place for entertainment.

The town of Debrecen was established on important trade routes and underwent rapid development. It became the centre of the Hungarian Reformation, its most significant monument being the large Calvinist church. But there are many other things to see in the town, too.

Nádudvar is famous for its potters. The ebony colour of the pots, jugs, vases and platters is due to firing techniques that have been passed down from father to son for hundreds of years.

Brief Description

The first Benedictine monks settled here in 996. They went on to convert the Hungarians, to found the country's first school and, in 1055, to write the first document in Hungarian. From the time of its founding, this monastic community has promoted culture throughout central Europe. Its 1,000-year history can be seen in the succession of architectural styles of the monastic buildings (the oldest dating from 1224), which still today house a school and the monastic community.

Justification for Inscription

The Committee decided to inscribe the nominated property on the basis of cultural criteria (iv) and (vi) considering that the site is of outstanding universal value illustrating in an exceptional manner the structure and setting of an early Christian Monastery that has evolved over a thousand years of continuous use. Its location and the early date of its foundation bear unique witness to the propagation and continuity of Christianity in Central Europe.

파논할마의 베네딕트 천년 왕국 수도원은 헝가리 죄르쇼프른주 카르파티아분지에 있는 헝가리 최초의 베네딕트회 사원이다. 중부유럽지역 그리스도교의 연속성과 전파를 나타내는 초기 유적이기도 하다.

로마제국시대 부다페스트를 중심으로 하는 카르파티아분지에는 판노니아(Pannonia)라고 불리는 속주가 있었다. 9세기말 헝가리의 기간주민이자 원래 우랄산맥일대에서 이곳으로 이주해 온 마자르족은 이곳을 정복한다. 마자르족의 왕 게자(Géza; 945 - 997)는 가톨릭에 귀의하여 가톨릭 왕이라 불렸는데 그에 의해 966년에 이 수도원이 만들어졌다.

처음 로마네스크 양식으로 창건 하였으나 12세기 초 화재로 소실되었고, 13세기경 수도원장 우로스 재임 시 고딕양식으로 재건하였다. 16세기에는 오스만 튀르크제국이 헝가리 영토 대부분을 점령하였을 때 주위에 방위 벽을 설치하고 요새화하였다. 17세기 헝가리의 대부분이 신성로마제국 합스부르크가의 지배를 받았을 때도 이곳은 점령되지 않았는데, 이 체재는 제1차 세계대전이 끝날 때 까지 200년간 계속되었다.

수도원의 성당은 좌우에 측랑이 딸려있는 3신랑(三身廊) 건물이다. 성당 내부는 신고전주의양식으로 장식되어 있다. 천장에는 14세기에 설치된 아름다운 교차 볼트리브가 설치되어 있다. 리브(riv)란 아치형태의 천장을 지탱하는 대들보이다.

남쪽에는 좌우에 각각 5쌍, 총 20개의 붉은색 대리석 원주(圓柱)가 서 있는 로마네스크양식의 문이 있으며, 문 밖에는 15세기에 만든 바로크양식의 회랑이 있다.

Géza (c. 945 - 997), Grand Prince of the Magyars (before 972 - 997)

Géza was the son of Taksony of Hungary, Grand Prince of the Magyars and his Pecheneg or Bulgar wife [2]. Géza's marriage with Sarolt, the daughter of Gyula of Transylvania, was arranged by his father.

After his father's death (before 972), Géza followed him as Grand Prince of the Magyars. Shortly afterwards, a Benedictine monk of the Abbey of Sankt Gallen, Bruno, who had been ordained Bishop of the Magyars, arrived to his court where he baptised Géza.

Although Géza probably never became a convinced Christian, during his rule Christianity began to spread among the Magyars. According to Thietmar of Merseburg, Géza continued to worship pagan gods; a chronicle claims that when he was questioned about this he stated he is rich enough to sacrifice to both the old gods and the new one.

In 973, twelve illustrious Magyar envoys, whom probably Géza had assigned, participated in the Diet held by Otto I, Holy Roman Emperor.

In 983, when Henry II, Duke of Bavaria rebelled against the then child Otto III, Holy Roman Emperor, the Magyars occupied Melk. However, Melk was reoccupied, already in 985, by Leopold I, Margrave of Austria. When Henry II lead his armies to the Vienna Basin in 991, the Magyars were obliged to evacuate the territories West of the Leitha (Hungarian: Lajta) River.

Géza arranged the marriage of his son Stephen I of Hungary to Giselle of Bavaria, the daughter of Henry II. He started the construction of the Abbey of Pannonhalma.

베네딕트(Benedict)

이탈리아의 수도사·성인(?480~?543). 젊은 시절 로마에서 문학을 공부하다가 학업을 중단, 수비아꼬의 동굴에서 은수생활을 시작하였다. 529년경 몬테카시노(Monte Cassino)에서 서양에서는 처음으로 수도원을 시작하여 베네딕트 교단을 세우고 제자들을 가르치면서 수도생활을 하여 수도회 제도의 기초를 굳혔다. 수도의 전통을 종합하여 유럽교회 안에 뿌리내리게 한 업적을 기려 "서방 수도생활의 사부" 라 일컬어진다.

말년에 저술한 수도규칙서는 성인 자신의 수도생활에서 얻은 경험과 하느님 체험에서 우러나온 참된 인간이해와 중용, 분별의 정신을 잘 담아내었으며 현재까지도 교회 내의 모든 수도생활의 기본 틀이 되고 있다.

베네딕트수도회

초기에는 많은 선교사를 배출, 서유럽의 그리스도교화에 많은 공헌을 하였다. 베네딕투스 수도원 중에서 가장 유명한 것은 클뤼니(Cluny)의 부르고뉴(Burgundy) 수도원이었다. 베네딕트회의 수도사이자 시인인 "Cluny Bernard(1100경~1156)는 서기 1140년에 쓴 라틴어로 된 3000여행에 이르는 장문의 풍자시 『De contemptu mudi』로 잘 알려져 있다. 프랑스 남부에 있는 이 클뤼니 수도원(L"Abbaye de Cluny)은 개혁의 중심으로 교회 발전에 큰 영향을 주었다. 학문을 존중하여 민족이동에 의한 황폐기 에도 많은 문헌을 보존하는 한편, 중세에는 사본 제작 등으로 문화의 유지 발전에 노력한 업적이 크다. 종교개혁 후 세력이 급속히 약화되었으나 19세기 중엽부터 다시 번창하였다. 현재 세계 각지에 수도원을 두고, 교육사업과 전례의 보급·개혁 등에 힘쓰고 있다.

한편 한국에 성 베네딕트수도회가 진출한 것은 지금으로부터 100년 전인 1909년으로 올해 9월 25일 100주년 기념미사가 25일 경북 칠곡군 왜관읍 베네딕트수도원에서 정진석 추기경의 주례로 진행되었다.

A Benedictine monastery, founded by Chief Prince Géza in 966, by settling down Czech Benedictine monks. His work was finished by King Stephen issuing a letter of privilege in 1002. Its first abbots known by names were Anasthas and Mór. At the end of the 11th century the Hungarian dignitaries held a meeting in the monastery, where they accepted the resolution of King Ladislaus's so-called Second Act. King Coloman received the ministers of Gottfried Bouillon, the leader of the crusaders marching through the country here in the monastery. By 1137 Abbot David had the burnt down church rebuilt and invited the king to the consecration ceremony. Among the 13th century abbots, Uros was outstanding, who directed the monastery for a long time (1207-1241), he even fought against the Tartars to protect the monastery. Abbot Uros had the people of the abbacy inventoried, had a special signet made for the convent besides his own one, he increased the number of charters and land possessions of the monastery (there were seven times more chareter issues during his directorship than earlier), and the Pope reassured the community of their privileges several times. He accompanied King Andrew II to the Holy Land, and travelled to Rome five times. He also participated in the IV Lateran synod. At the end of his life he remembered the years spent in the monastery in his will. After 1240 the discipline of the monks loosened, fewer and fewer people left their possessions to the monastery. Abbot Favus tried to help, but the chaotic situation at the end of the 13th century urged the decline of the monastery. In the age of the Árpád dynasty the monastery was an important scene of literary creation. Around 1090 eighty codices and around 200 pieces of literary work could be found in the library. Among them were the Ernst codex, and around 1240 the Liber ruber was prepared here in the scriptorium. St Stephen's larger legend and the St Emeric legend were also written here, and starting from the age of King Stephen, historical records were made here.

The letter of privileges of Pannonhalma

St Stephen's only charter which survived in a seemingly original form, and at the same time it is the earliest Latin diploma from Hungary. There are a lot of assumptions about it among scholars, since at the beginning of the 12th century or at the turn of the 12-13th centuries a Benedictine monk enlarged the text of St Stephen's charter and he copied the original one so skilfully that modern scholars identified his handwriting with that of Herbert C, a German clerk, who fled to St Stephen's court from a German chancellery after the death of Otto III. In this letter of privilege St Stephen assured the Pannonhalma monastery of the same rights as the Benedictine ancient colony, Montecassino had. He took it from the legitimacy of the county bishop (at the beginning he might have placed them under the power of the archbishop), he guaranteed the free election of the abbot, the consecrating and the abbot-Benedictating bishops; he gave liturgic privileges to the abbot, besides those of the church government, enabling him to do the service in sandals as a bishop, since the chapel (portable altar) marched in front of him. The so-called immune privilege was a significant one at that time, since it declared that secular officials could not make judgements in matters belonging to the monastery without the permission of the abbot. The composition of the charter is not homogeneous: one part is written in the first person singular, other parts are written in the first person plural. According to certain experts the text in the first person singular is a later interpolation, while the text in the first person plural was composed by Heribert C. In connection with the narrative text in the first person singular, it was suspected that it preserves the traces of a heroic song from the age of Stephen. Concerning the interpolation, there are two opposing views: one dates the birth of the charter to the 11-12th centuries, the other puts it to the turn of the 12-13th centuries. King Coloman's signet was attached to the charter later.

Brief Description

The variety of formations and the fact that they are concentrated in a restricted area means that the 712 caves currently identified make up a typical temperate-zone karstic system. Because they display an extremely rare combination of tropical and glacial climatic effects, they make it possible to study geological history over tens of millions of years.

카르스트는 물에 잘 녹기 쉬운 석회암이 지하수에 의한 굴착화작용(또는 공동화작용)을 받아 형성된다. 원래 유고슬라비아의 달마치야 연안을 따라 분포하는 석회암 지대인 카르스트라는 지역 이름에서 비롯되었지만, 현재는 이와 비슷한 특성이 나타나는 모든 지역에도 적용된다. 이러한 카르스트는 세계 도처에 널리 분포되어 있는데, 프랑스의 코스, 유카탄 반도, 미국의 중서부·켄터키·플로리다, 터키(천국의 계단) 등도 유명한 카르스트 지형이다. 중국의 황룡(黃龍)과 구채구도 세계적인 카르스트지형으로 세계자연유산으로 지정된 곳이다.

세계 주요동굴지역의 대부분은 카르스트 지역이다. 수억년에 걸쳐 석회를 머금은 물이 천정에서 떨어져 맺혀 종유석을 만들고, 바닥에 떨어진 물은 석순을 쌓아올린다.

카르스트의 특징적 지형으로는 라피에, 천연다리, 페피노 힐 등이 있다.

동굴이 충분히 커져서 동굴 천장이 지표면 가까이까지 확장되면 천장이 붕괴한다. 돌리네라고 하는 함몰지는 이렇게 형성되는데, 카르스트 지형의 대표적 특징이다. 돌리네가 서로 연결되면 폴리예(polje)라고 하는 훨씬 큰 함몰지가 형성되는데, 폴리예는 흔히 바닥이 편평하며 석회암의 불용성 잔유물로 된 토양으로 덮여 있다.

우리나라 남한 지역의 경우, 강원도의 삼척·영월·정선·평창과 충청북도의 단양·제천에 이르는 태백산 남부지역에 집중되어 있으며, 그밖에 경상북도의 울진·문경, 전라북도의 익산에도 분포한다. 남한에서 발견된 200여 개의 석회동굴 가운데 40％ 이상이 강원도에 집중 분포되어 있고, 충청북도에 45개소, 경상북도에 25개소 정도 있다.

이들 중에는 중요한 관광자원으로 개발되었거나 되고 있는 곳이 있다. 울진의 성류굴, 영월의 고씨굴, 삼척의 환선굴, 단양의 고수동굴, 삼척의 대이리동굴지대 등이 그곳이다.

석회동굴은 선사시대 또는 전란 때 주거지나 피난처로 이용된 곳도 있으며, 고고학적·역사적·생물학적으로 가치 있는 곳도 있다. 특히 인골이나 동물의 유골들은 이 석회동굴 속에서 화석화가 잘 되기 때문에 선사시대 생활상을 밝히는데 매우 가치가 있는 곳이다. 슬로베니아의 포스토이나 동굴에서는 공룡의 화석들이 발견되어 동굴 내에서 복원 전시하고 있다. 베트남 하롱베이 혼가이섬에서는 호아빈 문화로 알려진 1만 년 전 인류의 유적이 발견되기도 하였다.

면적이 558㎢이고 712개의 석회암 동굴이 현재까지 발견되었다. 슬로바키아 남동부의 산악지대에 펼쳐져있는 슬로바키아 카르스트 지대에는 클리노베츠산, 피히텔베르그산 등이 솟아있는데, 이 산들이 흘러내려 헝거리 북부에 있는 아그텔레크 카르스트와 이어진다.

이곳은 12세기부터 사람들이 살기 시작한 곳으로 일찍부터 광공업이 크게 발전한 곳이다. 크라스나호르카성(城), 야솝수도원 등 슬로바키아 최고의 건축물이 남아있어 카르스트 경관보호지역으로 지정되어 있기도 하다. 대지의 70%가 풀로 덮여 있는 초원지대인데 대부분 건조한 지역이다. 곳곳에서 돌리네, 우발레, 크레바스 등의 지형이 관찰된다.

헝거리(Hungary)와 슬로바키아(Slovakia) 두 나라에 국경에 걸쳐있는 바라돌라도미차동굴은 약 25㎞에 이른다. 동굴 내부의 길은 여러 갈래로 나누어지다가 또 이어지는데 이곳에는 유럽에서 가장 아름답고 큰 석순이 있다. <천체관측소>라 불리는 석순은 세계 최대의 크기를 자랑하는데, 높이가 25m, 지름이 8m, 무게는 약 1천톤에 이른다.

이곳의 정식명칭은 '부다페스트의 도나우 강변과 부다성, 안드레시 애비뉴'인데 영문으로는 ' Budapest, including the Banks of the Danube, the Buda Castle Quarter and Andrássy Avenue'이다. 1987년 지정되었을 당시에는 '부다페스트의 도나우 강변과 부다성'이었는데 영문으로는 'Budapest, the Banks of the Danube, and the district of Buda Castle'이라는 명칭이었다. 그 후 2002년 안드레시 애비뉴를 포함시키면서 지금의 이름으로 변경되었다.

This site has the remains of monuments such as the Roman city of Aquincum and the Gothic castle of Buda, which have had a considerable influence on the architecture of various periods. It is one of the world's outstanding urban landscapes and illustrates the great periods in the history of the Hungarian capital.

부다페스트 다뉴브 강변(Budapest, including the Banks of the Danube)은 동서양 문화가 어루러진 '동유럽의 파리'라고들 이야기한다. 부다페스트에는 아시아 뿐만 아니라 유럽, 중동 등 다양한 지역의 아름다운 문화유산이 뒤섞여 있어서 관광객들에게 이처럼 '동유럽의 파리'라는 애칭을 얻고 있다. 부다페스트는 도나우 강을 가운데 두고서 서쪽 지역의 부다와 동쪽의 페스트로 나뉜다. 부다는 고대 로마의 군사기지로 개발되기 시작해 지난 1361년 헝가리의 수도가 되었다. 13세기 이후 헝가리 왕들이 거주했던 부다는 왕궁을 비롯해 역사적 유물과 건축물들이 많이 있다.

페스트가 도시로 형성된 것은 13세기 무렵으로, 옛 부터 중세 시대 이후 상업과 예술의 중심지로 성장하기 시작했다. 관광 명소는 왕궁 언덕, 어부의 요새, 마챠시 교회가 있다.

아름다운 도나우 강, 녹색의 언덕과 유서 깊은 건축물들을 간직하고 있는 부다 지구, 쇼핑거리와 오피스빌딩들이 줄을 맞춘 듯 들어서 있는 페스트 지구가 서로 조화를 이룬 부다페스트는 오래 전부터 '도나우의 진주'란 별명을 얻었다. 유네스코도 이 도시가 가진 역사적 건축물들의 가치를 높이 평가하여 87년 세계문화유산으로 지정했다.

헝거리의 세계문화(자연)유산 Ⅰ - 홀로퀘 전통마을

세계유산이란 국제연합 교육과학문화기구(유네스코)가 1972년 11월, 제17차 정기총회에서 채택한 "세계 문화 및 자연유산 보호협약"에 따라 지정한 유산을 말한다. 인류문명과 자연사에 있어 매우 중요한 자산인 세계유산은 전 인류가 공동으로 보존하고 이를 후손에게 전수해야 할 세계적으로 매우 중요한 가치를 가진 유산이다. 『세계유산협약』에 따라 세계유산위원회가 인류전체를 위해 보호되어야 할 현저한 보편적 가치가 있다고 인정하여 UNESCO 세계유산일람표에 등록한 문화재로 문화유산, 자연유산, 복합유산으로 분류한다.

헝가리(HUNGARY)에는 UNESCO 세계유산일람표에 등록한 문화재가 아래와 같이 모두 8건이 있다. 7건은 세계문화유산이고, 1건은 헝거리와 슬로바키아(Slovakia) 두 나라에 걸쳐있는 세계자연유산이다. 참고로 헝가리가 유네스코 세계유산 협약가입일은 1985년 7월 15일이다. 우리나라는 1988년 9월 14일이며, 북한은 1998년 7월 21일이다.

Brief Description

Hollokö is an outstanding example of a deliberately preserved traditional settlement. This village, which developed mainly during the 17th and 18th centuries, is a living example of rural life before the agricultural revolution of the 20th century.

홀로쾨전통마을은 항가리 노그라드주 체르하트산 자락에 있는 작은 마을이다. 17세기 ~ 18세기에 조영된 마을로 19세기 중유럽의 농민들의 생활상이 잘 보존되어 있다. 마을 주변에는 13~14세기경에 축조된 요새의 잔해가 남아있고, 마을 가운데에 14세기경에 세운 성당도 남아있다. 매우 단순한 건물인 성당의 경우, 나무로 된 종루가 만들어져 있다.

이곳에는 카스피해 연안에서 살다가 이곳으로 이주해 온 팔로츠인들이 살아가고 있다. 그들은 터키계 쿠만인의 후예들이다.

이곳에는 아름다운 건물들이 많이 남아있다. 팔로츠 양식이라 칭하는 전통목조건물들이다. 바닥 기초를 한 다음 진흙과 짚을 섞어 벽체를 만들어 공간을 구획한다. 그 다음 발코니처럼 생긴 회랑을 기둥으로 받쳐 길을 향하여 돌출시켜 만든 건물들이다.

목조건물들인지라 화재로 수차에 걸쳐 훼손이 심하게 되곤 하였다. 현존하는 것은 1909년 화재 이후 재건된 126채의 가옥과 작업장 등의 건물들이다.

This memorial column, erected in the early years of the 18th century, is the most outstanding example of a type of monument specific to central Europe. Brief Description

This pilgrimage church, built in honour of St John of Nepomuk, stands at Zelená Hora, not far from Ždár nad Sázavou in Moravia. Constructed at the beginning of the 18th century on a star-shaped plan, it is the most unusual work by the great architect Jan Blazej Santini, whose highly original style falls between neo-Gothic and Baroque.

쿠트나호라(체코어:Kutná Hora, 독일어: Kuttenberg)는 스트르셰도체스키 주(Středočeský kraj)에 있는 도시로 프라하에서 동쪽으로 약 70 km 거리에 있으며 많은 문화 유적이 남아 있는 주요 관광 도시의 하나이다. 특히 고딕 양식의 성 바르보라 성당(체코어:Chrám sv. Barbory)과 성모 마리아 대성당 (Katedrála Panny Marie v Sedlci)은 1995년 유네스코 세계유산으로 등록되었다.

Brief Description

Kutná Hora developed as a result of the exploitation of the silver mines. In the 14th century it became a royal city endowed with monuments that symbolized its prosperity. The Church of St Barbara, a jewel of the late Gothic period, and the Cathedral of Our Lady at Sedlec, which was restored in line with the Baroque taste of the early 18th century, were to influence the architecture of central Europe. These masterpieces today form part of a well-preserved medieval urban fabric with some particularly fine private dwellings.

Brief Description

Between the 17th and 20th centuries, the ruling dukes of Liechtenstein transformed their domains in southern Moravia into a striking landscape. It married Baroque architecture (mainly the work of Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach) and the classical and neo-Gothic style of the castles of Lednice and Valtice with countryside fashioned according to English romantic principles of landscape architecture. At 200 km2, it is one of the largest artificial landscapes in Europe.

Justification for Inscription

The Committee decided to inscribe the nominated property on the basis of cultural criteria (i),(ii) and (iv) considering that the site is of outstanding universal value being a cultural landscape which is an exceptional example of the designed landscape that evolved in the Enlightenment and afterwards under the care of a single family. It succeeds in bringing together in harmony cultural monuments from successive periods and both indigenous and exotic natural elements to create an outstanding work of human creativity. The Committee decided to include criterion (i) to the proposed criteria since the ensemble is an outstanding example of human creativity.

Criterion ii: Holasovice is of special significance in that it represents the fusion of two vernacular building traditions to create an exceptional and enduring style, known as South Bohemian Folk Baroque. Criterion iv: The exceptional completeness and excellent preservation of Holasovice and its buildings make it an outstanding example of traditional rural settlement in central Europe.

Brief Description

Kroměříž stands on the site of an earlier ford across the River Morava, at the foot of the Chriby mountain range which dominates the central part of Moravia. The gardens and castle of Kroměříž are an exceptionally complete and well-preserved example of a European Baroque princely residence and its gardens.

Justification for Inscription

Criterion (ii): The ensemble at Kroměříž, and in particular the Pleasure Garden, played a significant role in the development of Baroque garden and palace design in central Europe.

Criterion (iv): The Gardens and Castle at Kroměříž are an exceptionally complete and well preserved example of a princely residence and its associated landscape of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Brief Description

Litomyšl Castle was originally a Renaissance arcade-castle of the type first developed in Italy and then adopted and greatly developed in central Europe in the 16th century. Its design and decoration are particularly fine, including the later High-Baroque features added in the 18th century. It preserves intact the range of ancillary buildings associated with an aristocratic residence of this type.

Justification for Inscription

Criterion (ii): Litomyšl Castle is an outstanding and immaculately preserved example of the arcade castle, a type of building first developed in Italy and modified in the Czech lands to create an evolved form of special architectural quality. Criterion (iv): Litomyšl Castle illustrates in an exceptional way the aristocratic residences of central Europe in the Renaissance and their subsequent development under the influence of new artistic movements.

Brief Description

Built between the 11th and 18th centuries, the Old Town, the Lesser Town and the New Town speak of the great architectural and cultural influence enjoyed by this city since the Middle Ages. The many magnificent monuments, such as Hradcani Castle, St Vitus Cathedral, Charles Bridge and numerous churches and palaces, built mostly in the 14th century under the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles IV.

Statement of Significance

Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe in terms of its setting on both banks of the Vltava River, its townscape of burger houses and palaces punctuated by towers, and its individual buildings.

The Historic Centre represents a supreme manifestation of Medieval urbanism (the New Town of Emperor Charles IV built as the New Jerusalem). The Prague architectural works of the Gothic Period (14th and 15th centuries), of the High Baroque of the 1st half of the 18th century and of the rising modernism after the year 1900, influenced the development of Central Europe, perhaps even all European architecture. Prague represents one of the most prominent world centres of creative life in the field of urbanism and architecture across generations, human mentality and beliefs.

Prague belongs to the group of historic cities which have preserved the structure of their development until the present times. Within the core of Prague, successive stages of growth and changes have respected the original grand-scale urban structure of the Early Middle Ages. This structure was essentially and greatly enlarged with urban activities in the High Gothic period with more additions during the High Baroque period and in the 19th century. It has been saved from any large-scale urban renewal or massive demolitions and thus preserves its overall configuration, pattern and spatial composition.

In the course of the 1100 years of its existence, Prague’s development can be documented in the architectural expression of many historical periods and their styles. The city is rich in outstanding monuments from all periods of its history. Of particular importance are Prague Castle, the Cathedral of St Vitus, Hradćany Square in front of the Castle, the Valdgtejn Palace on the left bank of the river, the Gothic Charles Bridge, the Romanesque Rotunda of the Holy Rood, the Gothic arcaded houses round the Old Town Square, the High Gothic Minorite Church of St James in the Stark Mĕsto, the late 19th century buildings and town plan of the Nave Mĕsto.

As early as the Middle Ages, Prague became one of the leading cultural centres of Christian Europe. The Prague University, founded in 1348, is one of the earliest in Europe. The milieu of the University in the last quarter of the 14th century and the first years of the 15th century contributed among other things to the formation of ideas of the Hussite Movement which represented in fact the first steps of the European Reformation. As a metropolis of culture, Prague is connected with prominent names in art, science and politics, such as Charles IV, Petr Parléř, Jan Hus, Johannes Kepler, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Kafka, Antonín Dvořák, Albert Einstein, Edvard Beneš (co-founder of the League of Nations) and Václav Havel.

Criterion (ii): The historic centre of Prague admirably illustrates the process of continuous urban growth from the Middle Ages to the present day. Its important role in the political, economic, social, and cultural evolution of central Europe from the 14th century onwards and the richness of its architectural and artistic traditions meant that it served as a major model for urban development for much of central and eastern Europe.

Criterion (iv): Prague is an urban architectural ensemble of outstanding quality, in terms of both its individual monuments and its townscape, and one that is deservedly world-famous.

Criterion (vi): The role of Prague in the medieval development of Christianity in central Europe was an outstanding one, as was its formative influence in the evolution of towns. By virtue of its political significance in the later Middle Ages and after, it attracted architects and artists from all over Europe, who contributed to its wealth of architectural and artistic treasures. The 15th century foundation of Charles University made Prague a renowned seat of learning, a reputation that it has preserved up to the present day. Since the reign of Charles IV, Prague has also been the intellectual and cultural centre of central Europe, and is indelibly associated with such world-famous names as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Kafka.

3. 텔치 역사센터 ( Historic Centre of Telc : 문화, 1992)

ㅇ 처음에는 언덕정상에 목조로 세운 가옥이었으나 14세기경 화재이후 석재로 재건립하고 주위를 벽과 연못으로 둘러 강화시킴

The houses in Telc, which stands on a hilltop, were originally built of wood. After a fire in the late 14th century, the town was rebuilt in stone, surrounded by walls and further strengthened by a network of artificial ponds. 크로아티아(CROATIA)에는 유네스코 지정 세계유산이 6건 있다. 대부분 문화유산인데 1건은 자연유산이다. 이 세계자연유산인 플리트비스 호수 국립공원의 모습을 소개한다. 1992년 위기에 처한 세계유산의 하나로 분류되기도 했지만 1996년 다시 제외되어 현재에 이르고 있다.

Brief Description

The waters flowing over the limestone and chalk have, over thousands of years, deposited travertine barriers, creating natural dams which in turn have created a series of beautiful lakes, caves and waterfalls. These geological processes continue today. The forests in the park are home to bears, wolves and many rare bird species.

플리트비스 호수 국립공원 소속 안내원

크로아티아에서 가장 오래된 국립공원이자 최대의 비경이라는 플리트비체 국립공원(Plitvice Lakes National Park)

바닥까지 들여다보이는 동남아시아 인근의 바닷물과는 또 다른, 터키석 색이 나는 물감을 잔뜩 풀어놓은 듯한 청록색 호수가 층층이 폭포를 지나는 동안 호수에서 개울로, 개울에서 다시 호수로 모습을 바꾸며 끝도 없이 이어지다가 공원의 경계에서 슬그머니 수량이 줄어들며 개천으로 바뀌는 것도 묘하지만 풍부한 물과 삼림이 있는 덕에 온갖 동식물이 서식할 수 있는 보금자리 역할을 하는 이곳은 크로아티아에서, 그리고 발칸반도에서 자연의 숨결이 가장 생생하고 가깝게 느껴지는 곳이다.

유럽에서 가장 아름다운 숲

수도 자그레브(Zagreb)를 출발한 지 거의 두 시간 만에 플리트비체 국립공원 입구에 닿았다. 자그레브와 아드리아 해에 위치한 항구도시 자다르(Zadar)의 중간 쯤, 보스니아와의 국경과도 접해 있는 공원은 크로아티아의 동서남북 어디에서나 공평하게 정중앙 쯤 자리 잡고 있다.

크로아티아에 있는 총 8개의 국립공원 중 가장 오래되고 규모도 큰 이곳이 알려진 것은 그리 오래되지 않았다. 사람의 손을 타지 않은 순수 자연의 땅이던 플리트비체가 크로아티아를 대표하는 관광지로 지정되었고, 다시 30년이 지난 1979년에 유네스코 세계 자연 유산 리스트에 등재되며 발칸반도와 크로아티아를 잇는 비경을 보려는 사람들이 몰려들기 시작했는데, 인근 유럽에서 플리트비체를 찾는 사람이 많은 것을 보면 유럽에서 가장 아름다운 원시림 중 한 곳이라는 말이 과장은 아닌 듯싶다.

16개 호수의 장대한 하모니

3량의 버스가 연결된 트레인에서 내려선 곳은 플리트비체 국립공원 호수의 수원이라 할 수 있는 프로스찬스코 호수(Proscansko Jezero)가 치기노바츠 호수(Ciginovac Jezero), 오크루그라크 호수(Okrugljak Jezero)로 나뉘는 경계인 하류 인근의 제3 스테이션이다. 한국에서 지금껏 살아온 기자에게는 어느 샌가 물은 항상 북에서 남으로 흐르는 거라는 고정관념이 생겨버렸는데, 플리트비체에서는 반대로 남에서 북으로 물이 흐른다. 남쪽의 비엘라(Bijela) 강과 츠르나(Crna) 강에서 흘러온 물이 플리트비체의 원류가 되는 프로스찬스코(Proscansko) 호수를 이루고, 호수는 다시 하류의 호수와 폭포로 연결되며 플리트비체의 절경을 이루는 것. 자연이 잘 보존된 곳 치고 아름답지 않은 곳이 없지만, 플리트비체를 두고 굳이 절경이다, 비경이다 온갖 수식어를 갖다 붙이며 치레를 하는 데도 물론 이유는 있다. 프로스찬스코 호수의 맑고 풍부한 물은 계단식으로 이어지는 16개의 호수와 92개의 크고 작은 폭포를 지나며 8킬로미터에 걸쳐 길게 이어지고, 호수의 전체 면적만 해도 200 헥타르, 주변의 삼림까지 합하면 3만 헥타르에 해당하는 광활한 지역에 온갖 종의 동식물이 서식하고 있으니, 플리트비체 국립공원 그 하나로 온전히 자연의 보고가 되는 셈이다.

플리트비체의 워킹 투어

남에서 북으로 점차 지대가 낮아지는 이곳에서는 걸어서도 충분히 공원을 돌아볼 수 있는데, 워낙 지역이 광활하다보니 호수를 가로지르는 보트와 그 둘레를 운행하는 트레인이 운행된다. 호수를 기준으로 그 주위를 에워싸고 세 곳의 트레인 스테이션과 보트를 탈 수 있는 부두 역시 세 곳이 있다. 물론 어떤 코스를 선택하느냐에 따라 소요되는 시간은 달라지고, 가이드 없이도 충분히 돌아볼 수 있도록 공원 곳곳에 색을 달리한 안내 표지판이 마련되어 있으니 자신이 의도하는 바에 맞도록 코스를 선택해서 그 표지를 따라가기만 해도 빠르면 3시간, 늦어도 5시간이면 플리트비체 완전 정복이 가능하다.

기자가 프로스찬스코 호수 앞의 제3 스테이션에 선 것도 나름 치밀한 계획을 세운 뒤다. 입구에서부터 가장 지대가 높은 3스테이션까지는 트레인을 타고 올라간 다음, 당연히 점차 지대가 낮아질 북쪽을 향해 걸어가다가 어퍼 레이크(Upper Lakes)와 로어 레이크(Lower Lakes)의 경계 쯤 되는 부분에서는 보트를 타고 가장 넓은 코즈악 호수(Kozjak Jezero)를 건너기로 한 것. 온전히 내 걸음으로만 일주한다면 더 기억에 남겠지만, 어쩌랴. 으레 그렇듯 주어진 시간은 제한되어 있는 것을.

본격적인 플리트비체 국립공원의 투어가 시작될 제3 스테이션에는 스테이션임을 알리는 나무 표지판이 서 있고, 옅은 베이지색의 갈대가 울창한 길 사이로 나무 인도교가 깔려 있다. 나중에 워킹투어 구간을 끝까지 걷다 보면 알게 되겠지만, 공원 전체를 통틀어 사람들이 걸어 다닐 수 있는 구간에는 모두 나무 인도교가 깔려 있어 굳이 이정표를 보지 않아도 길을 잃지 않도록 하는 또 다른 상징이 된다.

200헥타르에 이르는 호수 지대를 통과하며 하류로 내려가려다 보니 가끔은 호수와 얕은 개울 위를 가로, 세로로 가로지르도록 나무다리가 놓인 곳도 있고, 폭포를 옆에 두고 나란히 걷게 되기도 한다. 수량이 풍부한 프로스찬스코 호수는 아래로 거듭해서 흐르며 치기노바츠(Ciginovac), 오크루그라크(Okrugljak), 벨리코(Veliko), 그라딘스코(Gradinsco) 호수 등 어퍼 레이크 지역의 수원이 된다.

플리트비체의 호수에는 다량의 석회암 성분이 포함되어 있어 물의 색이 푸른 옥빛을 띤다. 물속의 이끼가 탄산칼슘 성분을 흡수해서 확장되며 제방을 이루고, 수중생물이 그 외벽을 덮고 자라나며 자연스레 폭포를 이루다보니 수원지에 가까운 상류 지역은 물살이 센 편이다. 개울과 폭포로 연결되며 긴 구간을 흐르는 호수는 물속에 포함된 탄산칼슘이 계속적으로 석회 침전물을 만들어 플리트비체 국립공원의 호수는 지금도 끊임없이 변하고 있다. 변하는 것은 호수의 경관 뿐이 아니다. 깊은 호수의 물빛 역시 계절과 시간에 따라 달라진다. 여름에는 파랬던 물색이 겨울에는 더욱 깊어지고, 하늘색에서 연한 초록빛으로, 진한 파랑에서 잿빛으로 변하는 등, 물속 미네랄과 유기체 함량에 따라 색을 바꾼다. 비가 많이 내려 외부의 진흙이 호수에 유입되거나, 햇빛이 내리쬐는 각도에 달라서도 달라지곤 하는데 대개는 호수 바닥에 쌓인 탄산석회로 인해 청명하기 그지없는 터키옥빛을 낸다.

계속 내리막길이 이어지고, 급격한 경사가 없어서 상부 호수를 따라 내려가는 길은 그리 힘들지 않다. 가끔 반대편에서 위를 향해 올라오는 사람들과 마주치게 되곤 하는데, 아래에서부터 가쁜 숨을 몰아쉬며 올라오는 그들 대부분이 노년층의 관광객들이어서 안타까울 따름이다. 내리막길이어도 서너 시간동안 걸으려면 다리가 아픈데, 만약에라도 보트를 먼저 타려는 성급한 욕심에 산길을 거슬러 올라가는 우는 범하지 마시길.

모퉁이를 돌고, 고개를 넘어설 때마다 풍경을 달리하며 연방 감탄을 자아내게 하는 어퍼 레이크 지역을 3시간 반 쯤 쉼없이 걸었을 때, 드디어 코즈악 호수(Kozjak Jezero)에 닿았다. 사실, 바닥까지 투명하게 들여다보이는 옥빛 호수와 물에 잠긴 고목, 사람의 손을 탄 적이 없는지 인기척이 느껴져도 피하지 않는 물고기 떼와 청둥오리 무리를 구경하다 보면 시간이 얼마나 흘렀는지 실감도 나지 않지만 말이다. 크로아티아어로 ‘크다’라는 의미를 가진 코즈악(Kozjak)은 그 이름처럼 플리트비체 국립공원에서 가장 큰 호수다. 어퍼 레이크와 로어 레이크의 중간 쯤, 그 경계에 위치한 터라 이곳에서 보트를 타고 호수를 건너면 그때부터는 국립공원의 하부가 시작되는 셈이다. 하부로 내려오면 바닥이 훤히 보이는 호수에서 유영하는 숭어와 더 빈번하게 모습을 드러내는 청둥오리에만 맘을 뺏기기 쉽지만, 공원에는 불곰, 늑대, 오소리, 여우 등의 야생동물을 비롯해 부엉이, 뻐꾸기, 청둥오리, 왜가리 등 160 종 이상의 조류가 서식하고 있다. 다음 일정이 촉박하지만 않으면 옥빛 호수만 들여다보지 말고 하늘과 숲과 발밑의 잔디에도 고루 시선을 주며 천천히 발길을 옮길 것.

코즈악 호수에서부터 시작되는 로어 레이크는 밀라노바크 호수(Milanovac Jezero), 카루데로바츠 호수(Kaluderovac Jezero)로 이어지는데, 이 지역은 어퍼 지역에 비해 호수의 규모가 작고 수량이 줄어들며 수심도 얕아지다가 메인 게이트 근처의 코라나(Korana) 강과 사스타프치 호수(Sastavci Fall)에 이르면 인근 라임스톤 지역의 지반에 흡수되어 눈에 띄게 수량이 줄어든다. 페리에서 내린 후 메인 게이트에 이르는 한 시간 남짓한 거리에 78미터의 높이로 플리트비체 국립공원 내에서 가장 긴 폭포라는 벨리키 슬랩(Veliki Slap)을 만나게 되기는 하지만 어퍼 레이크 지역에서 감탄만 연발하며 놀랐던 가슴을 진정시키며 플리트비체에서의 워킹투어를 마무리할 시점이기도 하다.

취재팀의 카메라에 담긴 플리트비체는 이제 막 단풍이 시작되는 10월 초의 모습을 하고 있지만, 겨울에도 그리 춥지 않은 곳인 만큼 늦게까지 단풍을 볼 수 있는 크로아티아는 축복받은 땅이다. 이웃 발칸반도의 나라보다 국토는 작지만(슬로베니아를 제외하고) 아드리아 해를 온전히 끼고 있는 것도 그렇거니와, 거대 자연의 들숨과 날숨이 교차되는 플리트비체 국립공원까지 크로아티아의 영역에 있으니 이웃 나라들의 부러움 섞인 원성쯤은 기꺼이 감수할 만도 하다. 단풍이 예쁘게 물들어가는 이 가을에, 플리트비체의 절경은 더욱 빛이 난다.

872년 된 비엔나의 호일리게식당

오스트리아 비엔나에 갔다면 대부분 찾는 식당이 있다. 비엔나 시내에서 약 6km 떨어져 있는 '그린찡( Grinzing)' 이라는 마을에 모여 있는 '호일리게'를 파는 식당들이다. Schottentor에서 트램 38번을 타고 간다.

'호일리게(Heurige)'는 프랑스의 '보졸레누보'처럼 '그 해 만든 포도주', 특히 백포도주를 일컫는 말이었다고 한다. 그러나 지금은 '호일리게'를 포도주와 함께 음식도 판매하는 선술집 같은 서민들의 주점이라는 뜻으로, 이곳에서 파는 음식이름으로 바뀌었다. 호일리게 와인을 파는 주점(영어로는 Tavern)을 별도로 '호일리거(Heuriger)'라고 말하기도 한다.

주로 소시지 혹은 삶거나 훈제한 돼지고기, 샐러드, 삶은 감자 등의 요리를 '호일리게'와 겯들여 먹는다.

우리가 찾은 호일리게 식당은 1137년부터 영업을 시작하였다고 한다. 872년 동안 영업을 해온 전통있는 식당이었다. 안에 들어서면 이곳을 찾은 명사들의 사진들이 붙어있다. 아롱드롱. 소피아 로렌 같은 배우에서부터 클린턴, 부시, 푸틴 같은 정치지도자, 달라이라마와 교황 등 사진만 보아도 알 만한 사람들의 것이었다.

그린찡 마을에 '호일리게' 식당들이 많이 늘어나게 된 것은 '마리아 테레지아' 여제의 와인 생산 장려 정책에서 비롯되었다고 한다.

마리아 테레지아와 그의 가족들

마리아 테레지아(Maria Theresia, 1717년 5월 13일 ~ 1780년 11월 29일)는 신성 로마 제국의 프란츠 1세의 황후(1745년 ~ 1765년)이자, 오스트리아의 여대공(재위 1740년 ~ 1780년)이며, 헝가리와 크로아티아의 여왕(재위 1741년 ~ 1780년) 겸 보헤미아의 여왕(재위 1743년 ~ 1780년)이면서, 파르마 여공(재위 1740년 ~ 1748년)이다. 일반적으로‘여제’라고 불리며 실제로도 여제나 다름없었지만, 공식적으로는 신성 로마 제국의 군주가 아닌 황후였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그녀는 당시 사람들에게 사실상 여제(女帝)시 되고 있었다. 남편인 프란시스 1세가 실제 권한을 거의 갖고 있지 않았기 때문이다.

당시 사회가 혼란 속에 빠져, 와인 생산이 침체되자 마리아 테레지아 여제는 세금 규제를 완화해 주는 방안을 내 놓게 되었고, 또 그의 아들 요세프 2세는 와인 농가에서 본인들이 직접 만든 치즈와 소시지 등과 함께 와인을 판매하도록 허가하였다. 그 결과 포도 재배 단지였던 그린찡 마을에 많은 '호일리게식당'들이 생겨나게 된 것이다.

악기 연주자는 테이블을 돌면서 바이올린과 아코디언으로 연주를 하는데 한국 관광객들이 오면 아리랑, 만남 등 한국노래들도 가요도 빼놓지 않았다.

Brief Description

Salzburg has managed to preserve an extraordinarily rich urban fabric, developed over the period from the Middle Ages to the 19th century when it was a city-state ruled by a prince-archbishop. Its Flamboyant Gothic art attracted many craftsmen and artists before the city became even better known through the work of the Italian architects Vincenzo Scamozzi and Santini Solari, to whom the centre of Salzburg owes much of its Baroque appearance. This meeting-point of northern and southern Europe perhaps sparked the genius of Salzburg’s most famous son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whose name has been associated with the city ever since.

Justification for Inscription

The Committee decided to inscribe the nominated property on the basis of cultural criteria (ii), (iv) and (vi) and considered that the site is of outstanding universal value being an important example of a European ecclesiastical city- state which preserves to a remarkable degree its dramatic townscape, its historically significant urban fabric and a large number of outstanding ecclesiastical and secular buildings from several centuries. It is also noteworthy for its associations with the arts, and in particular with music in the person of its famous son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Brief Description

From the 18th century to 1918, Schönbrunn was the residence of the Habsburg emperors. It was designed by the architects Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and Nicolaus Pacassi and is full of outstanding examples of decorative art. Together with its gardens, the site of the world’s first zoo in 1752, it is a remarkable Baroque ensemble and a perfect example of Gesamtkunstwerk.

Justification for Inscription

The Committee decided to inscribe the nominated property as an ensemble on the basis of cultural criteria (i) and (iv) considering that the site is of outstanding universal value being an especially well preserved example of the Baroque princely residential ensemble, which constitutes an outstanding example of a Gesamtkunstwerk. The Palace and Gardens are exceptional by virtue of the evidence that they preserve of modifications over several centuries that vividly illustrate the tastes, interests and aspirations of successive Habsburg monarchs.

Brief Description

The Semmering Railway, built over 41 km of high mountains between 1848 and 1854, is one of the greatest feats of civil engineering from this pioneering phase of railway building. The high standard of the tunnels, viaducts and other works has ensured the continuous use of the line up to the present day. It runs through a spectacular mountain landscape and there are many fine buildings designed for leisure activities along the way, built when the area was opened up due to the advent of the railway.

Justification for Inscription

Criterion (ii): The Semmering Railway represents an outstanding technological solution to a major physical problem in the construction of early railways.

Criterion (iv): With the construction of the Semmering Railway, areas of great natural beauty became more easily accessible and as a result these were developed for residential and recreational use, creating a new form of cultural landscape.

Graz is a particularly fine example of the living heritage of a central European urban complex that was under Habsburg rule for many centuries. Criterion (ii): The historic centre of the city of Graz reflects artistic and architectural movements originating from the Germanic region, the Balkans, and the Mediterranean, for which it served as a crossroads for centuries. The greatest architects and artists of these different regions expressed themselves forcefully here and thus created brilliant syntheses.

Criterion (iv): The urban complex forming the historic centre of the city of Graz is an exceptional example of a harmonious integration of architectural styles from successive periods.
