◉ Refer to the following announcement

Effective Monday, July 14th, Fine Service will be operating the Jeffery Co. cafeteria and providing on-site catering services. Fine Service was selected as the result of a competitive procurement in which three bids were received. The contract with Belmonte was due to end on July 14 and Belmonte did not submit a bid for the continuation of its services even though they were welcome to do so. The new management company will be improving the menu variety, food quality and services, while generally maintaining the current pricing levels. You will notice some changes immedeately, but we expect several weeks before the new team is fully mobilized. We are excited about the change, and we encourage everyone to try the new Jeffery cafeteria. Cafeteria hours are to remain the same at this time:

 Breakfast 6:30 AM - 9:00 AM /

 Lunch 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM

Many studies in verbal learning have shown the beneficial influence on later memory of having the subject practice reciting the material to be learned. A classic experiment by Gates(1971) showed that after a necessary minimum time spent passively reading the material to be learned ( biographies in one experiment, nonsense syllables in another), students learned more, not by reading it over and over again, but trying actively to recite the material from memory, prompting or reminding themselves with the text to fill in forgotten details. The findings have held up rather well with other materials over the ensuing years. The value of active recitation is partly motivational, since the subject sets personal recall goals and checks his or her progress: the value is also partly informative, since failures in one recitation pinpoint the specific material where learning and retention efforts should be concentrated in the next cycle.

4. what is the author's main purpose in the passage?

① To explain the value of reciting material from memory in verbal learning

② To urge students to improve their learning through careful reading

③ To show how Gates's findings on verbal learning challenged previous experiments

④ To distinguish between verbal learning and other kinds of learning

5. In the Gates experiment involving biographies, the findings were probably based on how        well students could

① write biographies                         ② remember facts from biographies

③ classify biographies                       ④ read biographies in front of a group

6. The findings from the Gates experiment are said to "have held up rather will". This phrase    means that the findings have

① been widely published                     ② been memorized by many students

③ started an interesting debate in the field  ④ been confirmed by other studies

7. According to the passage, what should students do if they forget some material during         recitation from memory?

① Ignore the material and go on to the next poing

② Start over from the beginning            ③ Look at the written material for help

④ Ask someone to tell them what they missed

8. According to the passage, what is the informative value of active recitation?

① It shows a student which material has not been learned

 ② It demonstrates a student's verbal ability

③ It teaches a student to examine material critically

④ It sets a limit on the learning process

Last winter, John and Larry, ① both fourteen, decided that there were elderly people in their neighborhood who couldn't shovel and couldn't afford to ② have it done. So, they set out to do ③ what they could at no charge. They never even checked in with clients for thanks. Other boys heard about it and decided to help, too. After each snowfall, seven snowblowers met and got assignments. The response from the elderly ④ is best summed up by one grateful call from a weeping 75- year - old woman: "The boys came one day and cleared my walks. It was the first time the snow ⑤ had shoveled all winter. I could get out."
